With all the doom and gloom, nice to daydream sometimes.
Only stipulation to the discussion is that it has to be within your reach sooner or later due to good planning/dedication to the cause. No 40W Plasma rifles.

As long as you are paying for the ammo.
A custom Thompson. Starting with the improvements of the unbuilt M3 TSMG design, restoring the heatsink fins, detachable stock, VFG, Cutts compensator and drum-mag of the 1921/1927/1928 models, overhauling the design to take fullest possible advantage of a century's development in materials, sight and accessory-mount technology, and interchangeable barrels/bolts beefed up to take 10mm hotloads, .45 Super/.450 SMC and .50 GI.
OTOH, a TSMG in .44 Magnum could be pretty badass too... Granted, neither will probably ever be within my budget reach even if NFA dies in a sewage fire, but at least the technology is well within our grasp.
I’m a simple man, I’ll take a FA Ruger 10/22.
Gustav M45 aka Swedish K will probably be next.
Ultimax.

Negev NG7.
Since we’re dreaming, an M249. Relatively cheaper to feed than something in .308 and I can pretend I’m 20 again every time I shoot it.
Ruger AC556, but it is starting to get out of reach. There are still some "bargains" out there in them.
My big worry if I got one is parts and service.
Stg 44
Lot of mundane "dream" machine guns in this list. Almost allof them listed are relative cheap in the MG world.
I'd like to find a transferable ZB37.
Dream ones would be a Ameli or an Ultimax Mk4.
Stoner 63A commando
Mk46 Mod 0
Mp5/10mm
I am a simpleton, an mp5 would probably be my choice. Mags are still available, it has the cool factor, and the couple of times I have had the chance to shoot them were probably my favorite full auto guns to shoot, especially suppressed. Better than belt-fed for me.
Reading Rainbow Sux 20 years ago revealed to me that there are MP5's chambered in 10mm. That was then on a dream mg.
My dream MG would be a Thompson M1A1. A M16 is what I’d buy if I had the money. I have 9mm, .300, 5.56 and .22 uppers. The .22 upper is fun! I know it well and parts and accessories are readily available. The most fun I’ve had was with a Walther MPK I loved the slow cyclic rate of fire. I looked a few weeks ago and magazines are like hens teeth.

A man with exquisite taste! ;)
I already have mine. RR Colt M16A1 with a Geissele SSF trigger. I have a suppressed 6933 upper and a suppressed 5.5" . 22lr upper for it, along with any of my AR uppers I can mount on it. I
Obtainable but I don't know if I'll ever get around to?
A Navy or Artillery Luger
A 1st Gen Colt SAA in .45 Colt
A Rigby & Sons Mauser in .275 Rigby
A custom 6" STI Widebody in 10mm (I know, that one doesn't fit with the theme) :)
Sorry for the thread drift, but I wanted to have fun too!
Perhaps a little less mundane- the select-fire lightweight MG42 developed for Luftwaffe paratroopers. The FG42, I believe? Historically unique with ammo and some parts still available
Styer tmp/ B&T mp9 the theory behind the ergos has always fascinated me, and I'd love to run one to learn it and get proficient.
Off the top of my head (some just for historical reasons):
- M1919
- M1918 BAR
- M14
- M1 Thompson
- M4A1
- MP5-N
- UMP45
- Scorpion EVO 3 A1
- StG 44
- KAC Stoner LMG
For most bang for buck to me... A good RDIAS. After that a Tipman 22 LR 1919 MG.
For years I thought it'd be a MG42... but I'm slowly coming around to the idea of a M60 and getting it into a M60E6 configuration. Even with converting the MG42 to .308, the M60 would still be cheaper to feed. Rented a .308 MG42 and it was a jam o'matic. :(
PPSH with lots of drums

My unicorn is a 1928 tommy gun.
UMP45
Trejo 22 pistol
A minigun if I was dreaming further.
Steyr MPI or MP69
While it's not like a GPMG is ever going to be "handy" to tote or utilize, which one would more closely lean towards handy? An M240B or an M60 in E4 or E6 configuration? I've done the original M60 thing in the military and agree it was a PITA to maintain, but I thought several things were improved after the E3 version?
WOW! Just looked up Maremont's and upgraded E4/E6's on MG Price Guides and they're up close to $60K!
I may have to change my vote from Ultimax to the new KAC LAMG.
