Good point on the cost of ammo to wear out a can. But the bigger concern is if your can gives up the ghost 10 or 15 years from now. How will the NFA climate look at that time? Who knows?
I have yet to hear the new M4-2000. Hopefully when Iraqguns gets his we can do a side by side comparison with the 1000. But I really have a hard time believing that it will sound any quieter to the human ear than the 1000. I know it meters lower, but I just can't seem to hear much difference between any of the 5.56 cans I've heard.

Again, you've proven to be a wealth of information, and I thank all of you.
All my questions are now answered, and I've made up my mind. The deal I am working on with my friend is an even swap for the Ranger II and the rifle I have that he wants, which I will get if I can't get any extra dough... But, if I manage to get my MRD sold, and maybe a few other things, I am going to get the M4-1000. From what all I've read, I know that the SPR/M4 is the one I want, but I really don't see any way that I'd be able to obtain that kind of cash right now. It doesn't matter to me if the suppressor is rated for full-auto... I don't have any class III weapons, nor do I ever want one. To me, it's a waste of ammo, fun yes, but effective, no (IMO, of course). I prefer slow, well aimed precision shots.
Again, thanks everyone for the help!

With respect to the Fast attach.... The other aspect that makes this valuable is in cleaning the rifle. It's much easier to clean the barrel with the can off. And you don't want to be pushing wet patches through your can. It won't hurt the can, but if you get CLP and such in the baffles, the can will smoke when you fire it next.
As far as full auto rating goes.... that is somewhat misleading. I always say that an idiot dumping semi auto mags full of ammo can do way more damage to a silencer than a reasonable shooter firing some bursts. It's not hard at all to get a silencer VERY hot with semi auto fire.
