What manfr said about M16 bolt carrier
Not trying to start a storm on here, but I have an upper on order from a company that is listed WAY to the left of "the chart". I placed this order two months ago, and got the ar-15 regular BCG with it.
I called to request that the company swap out the AR group for the M-16 one, and the rep said sure, but then asked why. I stated what I've been reading on this site and others -- heavier weight leading to longer dwell time, the firing pin is fully shrouded, etc.
His comments back were along the lines that their semi-auto BCG firing pin is fully shrouded, so that is a moot point. As for the weight and longer dwell time, the M16 BCG weighs only 5-6 grams more, or about a total of 0.2 ounces -- pretty meaningless; he said you can do much better messing with springs and buffers than you ever could swapping out the BCG. He ended his speech with stating that people who are ordering the M16 BCGs who are not Mil/LEO are only doing so to brag they have full-auto parts in their rifle.
Kinda caught me off guard...But that has got me thinking -- is 0.2 ounces that much of a difference? I'm a civvy, never going to shoot full-auto, and only do rapid shooting in tactical classes under NSR situations and such. And he seems to have a point about the heavier buffers. So thoughts on this?
