I think the SOPMOD would be heavy if you put batteries and such in the storage tubes. Although I don't like how the storage tubes were designed because you have to take the stock off the receiver extension to remove the compartments.

i agree. my carbine is setup as such:
short MI rail bolted to the top front of the stock handguard
Viking Tactics offset light mount attached to rail
VCAS padded sling attached to the stock rear with a BFG UWL around delta ring
couldn't be happier for my uses
fwiw, i also have a 1-4x optic. the FSB doesn't bother me
I just put a CAA Stock Saddle on my 6920. Cheap effective alternative to the PRICEY SOPMOD.
just as a reference after adding a FF rail, light, VFG, Optic and magnifier my 6920 now weighs exactly 10lbs. Not bad for my but my wife can't hold it up for very long.
I plan to built at least 3 or 4more AR's down the road. Some will not have rails and will be minimalist and light weight.
Here it the Stock Saddle (older pic w/ out the latest goodies):

Hey i have a 6920 with a LaRue 7" rail. Seems like you want to go with a rail. I like the LaRue due to the fact the bottom rail is closer to the barrel, it has built in QD swivels and the lock up feature is solid. There are lighter options going with a rail. The DD Omega rail is lighter than the LaRue and includes QD swivels however it is a two piece rail which i see no reason in getting if you are able to go with a one piece and have no problem installing it. Another viable option is the DD Lite rail 7. These are lighter than the larue and also have a great lock up feature. They do not however have built in QD swivels. Add one of those and your 2 ounces or so under the LaRue weight.
If your trying to keep it light and for sure want a rail. I say a LaRue 7 or DD lite 7 and keep the standard stock.
To give you an idea here is mine. I could go lighter with a Aimpoint Micro T-1 but I like the size of the m3 lens. I also have a Troy BUIS.
Thinking about getting a MIAD also.
