supplements spring tension. Just think about it for a bit, it'll come to you.
The 0-ring increases extractor tension up to about 400%.
If you're not having extraction problems it isn't needed and can cause feeding problems especially when the buffer spring gets weak or the carbine is dry and dirty. Don't fix it if it isn't broken.
Lately I am seeing and repairing a lot of guns which are 'short-stroking'. About 1/2 the time it's a lose carrier key or lose, junk or just misaligned gas block. The other 1/2 of the time it's too heavy of a buffer, too high rate of a buffer spring, LMT enhanced carriers on guns with small gas ports with small barrels and .223 pressure ammo combined with one or all of the above. Some people are just throwing parts into their carbines thinking that they need this or that. They aren't understanding how or why such and such part works or how these things effect the system. A little knowledge can be dangerous.
Exactly right Robb. I get emails all the time from people that say "I took your advice and installed an H buffer and now my gun has problems". Whoah there skippy, my advice? When I ask them what problems they were having with the gun that they were trying to correct with the heavier buffer they say "none, I just wanted to make it 'better'". :rolleyes:
That's why I think the explanation of features in the Chart, your "what do I do now" thread, and an article I'm finishing up for Combat Tactics which is a variation on "oh no, I bought a BM/RRA/Stag before I knew better", all work great together to teach a man to fish. Give them the information, the why AND the how, and let them figure things out for themselves..
By the way. Do we have a list or chart with the known or approx. known gas port sizes of the various makers and configurations out there?
The same thing happens with people working on cars/hotrods guys get greedy thinking that they can run the biggest camshaft in the catalog with stock heads or they try to run a huge carburetor on motor that's no where capable handling it.
Happens in computers also some body buys a 32x something superburner they install it then it only burns at half the speed the burner is capable of and they think its the burners fault.
I like trying different ways of doing things but I also know what to expect when going out on my own and I don't freak out the first time it doesn't work and I also understand that the whole as to work as a system-system-system its all about matching one part to work together with the other part to work as a system.
