Optics for 3 gun?

I use an IOR 1.1-4 or an Aimpoint with a Larue Po-boy magnifier. The IOR has the advantage past 200 yards on smaller targets. I don't use offset irons with the IOR, at 1.1 it's like an Aimpoint for me. I need to get a cat tail for my IOR.

While low power variables are catching on in this area the most popular magnified optic is the ACOG.

The variables that are showing up in this area:
1. Weaver 1x3
2. Leupold 1.5-5 (various models)
3. Burris XTR 1-4


Optics I'm interested in checking out:
1. Swarovski 1-6
2. Meopta K-Dot
3. Trijicon TR24

If you can run two optics, the way to go IMHO, is a Trijicon TA33 and then an Aimpoint H-1/Trijicon RMR in a DD offset mount (positioned towards the muzzle). Not only is this combo LIGHTER than a lot of the 1-4 variable scopes out there, but will be faster than going back and fourth between the 1-4 settings.

My Open division rifle has glass on the top and a red dot on the handguard. It's not at 45 deg though, it's just off TDC enough that I only have to rotate the rifle enough to clear the class and see the full diameter of the red dot objective glass. It's probably 30 deg or so.

What adaptor/mount are you using?

I respectfully disagree with the piggyback RDS concept. Virtually every person I've seen try it at class and other venues, ends up with problems or doesn't use it all that much. This is probably a training issue, but imo it also speaks to needless complexity. I can see the value in the concept for using a bolt-action sniper rifle in CQB, but I think it's limited with an AR.

My own experience is with the TR-21/24 and while I'm comfortable with the scope, I agree that fiddling with variable power is a pain in the ass. Generally speaking initially I ran it at 1x and when accuracy required I took the time to turn it all the way up. In competition this took too much time. As I got more experience practice I just left it at about 2-3. It does represent a good bit of weight but it works very well and I preferred it to a RDS/Magnifier setup.

More and more I'm leaning towards an ACOG setup (3x30) without a piggyback...and just practicing with it for my competition setup.

I agree that the piggy-backed MRD on top of an ACOG (or anything really) is sub-optimal. It requires a LOT of repetition to become habitual to go to the higer LOS, and even then people tend to get lower on the stock under stress and drop into their magnified optic. Either way, the line of sight over bore is terrible for close-range work.

What is a viable method is to mount the MRD offset from the magnified optic, but at about the same height over bore so that all you need to do is cant the gun slightly inboard to work the MRD at close range targets.

It does take a lot of repetition to become intuitive with the roll for close targets.
The reason that these aren't seen at many close-range courses is that they are primarily oriented toward the ACOG as the primary optic for use at longer distances with the MRD as a close-range/indoor alternative aiming system.
One of the problems with the setup if finding the right balance between getting access to the alternate sight, sufficient peripheral vision to fight with, and excessive cant (which makes the gun tough to use in weird positions and uncomfortable). It doesn't work all that well with a 45 degree offset as there is too much cant. TVNC has one that they claim is just the right amount of cant, but that setup isn't what most people need or want since it also has a light mount for chicken-chokers (it can be removed, but the base still sticks out too much for my taste).

I would really like to see someone make a screw-in base to replace the bottom rail-mount of the T-1 or RMR with a semi-permanent rail attachment that would position the optic correctly for use with a slight cant. I am kinda imagining the DD offset but with the RMR interface on top instead of the 1913 rails.

If you are talking three gun two optics puts you into Open Division. Which is a lot more competative. You need an open (compensated and optical sighted pistol) pistol and shot gun. (shotgun with optics compensator and speed loaders or better yet a modified Saiga 12.

also just started competing in rifle matches here in our area..

if you are going the 2 optic route: scope & RDS..why limit the scope to just a low mag one, 1-4x? why not just get a 3-9x or 2.5-10x scope partnered with a RDS?

is it because of weight issues?

If you are going to go two optics I would go with a higher magnification. Most of the open guys I have seen have a red dot and a 3-9 or 4-12 power scope.
