Can someone help me/point me in the right direction to do more research on these and the pros/cons and just general knowledge. I have been searching but since "gas" is too short and gets removed I have been having trouble. Thanks.

Rifle is going to be the most reliable/softest shooting, followed by middy and then carbine.
Most prefer the middy gas system as it fits well on a 16" barrel.
IMHO, if you have a 16" weapon always go with a middy gas system.

I am going to ask. How does one tell on sight mid and carbine?
OK, so carbine is 7 inches, mid is 9", what is rifle length?
Rifle length is about 12".
I hope it is okay to post this link: http://www.ar15barrels.com/prod/operation.shtml - There is some great info on barrel length vs. gas system here.
Wife saw this as I was reading... she says most guys wouldn't be able to tell the difference between 2"... She said that she's surprised more guys with carbine lengths don't tell people all about their middies... I'm glad she's entertained, lol.
Does anyone make a 16" barrel with a rifle length gas system? It seems to me that it would look odd, but if it's the most reliable and softest shooting I'm surprised no one has tried it...
Also, given that the difference between carbine and middies is only 2" - does it make that much of a difference? I suppose it would if Grant recommends it, and I guess I just need to try one, but 2" doesn't seem to be that big of a deal.
Also, I usually throw a wildcard on three word search terms... so gas would become gas*
