Looks like Stag would be the better company to deal with out of the two. I can always buy the Magpul accessories later. I've done a little more research and now think the Daniel Defense XV deserves some serious consideration as well. The DD has the 1:7 twist and M4 feed ramps. Realistically I doubt I would purchase the kind of ammo that would benefit from the 1:7 twist as I plan on using the rifle primarily for home defense and plinking. Although if the worst ever happened it would be nice to have a rifle that I knew could handle whatever I could throw at it.
I still really like the price and what I've learned about Stag so far.

I went with the 1/9 twist barrel as I am only going to shoot 55 and 62 gr projectiles. I think all of the hoopla about 75 gr personal defense loads is just that. I am only going to shoot M193 and M855 so the 1/9 is best suited to shoot these rounds. I just can't see myslef shooting anything else....
My Stag will also stabilize my 69 gr SMK handloads I use for service rifle competition. Haven't tried the 77 gr SMK's as those are for the 600 yard line anyway and the M4 just won't cut the mustard at that distance.

I have had no problems with my Stag Model 2. I was looking into M&P15s and came upon the Stag at a good price. No malfunctions of any kind yet, which I can't say for my previously owned DPMS Panther.

My first AR was the Stag model 2 and I feel it is quite a good value. The upper/lower fitment is perfect with no wobble and is not too tight to disassemble. The only thing I needed to do was add a black insert to my bolt and have it staked. It will take you 15 minutes to do this yourself if you have a few common tools.
I also own a couple of LMT Defender's so I have something useful to compare and would recommend the Stag. If you do decide to spend a little more I would go with the Daniel Defense rifle as the 'next up' rifle.

I have a Stag 2T, RRA mid length CL LW, and a new DD M4 with the rail. I had the 2T upgraded with a BCM 16 BCG, and an H buffer. I use the Stag BCG as backup, after being properly staked (< 5 min in my shop). It has never even remotely acted weird, or anything but 100%. In fact, I fired my DD right back to back with the 2T and with exception to the rail, couldn't tell them apart. If I had it to do over, I would probably just get another 2T, however, the 1:7 twist gives me the option to add a suppressor and still stabilize subsonic loads in the future.
I am totally happy with my 2T, but my original BCG was not staked correctly. The H buffer made it shoot much smoother.

Another Stag owner here. I had the gas tube in the carrier and the castle nut staked. Do that and you should be set. I opted not to change the insert and the spring on the extractor, 'coz mine still runs fine.

I have a Stag upper but replaced the BCG with a Bravo Company BCG and an H buffer and it runs just fine.

Happy with my model 2
Purchased my model 2 before I found this forum. Might have gone with a different manufacturer had I read THE CHART, but....
I am very happy with the purchase. With the information I gathered here (Thanks, all who contributed), I replaced the extractor insert and spring ($5.00) and the stock carbine buffer with an H buffer ($21.00). I also restacked the BCG ($0.00). Castle nut was staked well. Seemed like cheap insurance.
The gun has worked very well. With approx 1K rounds through it, I have had no issues. Slow fire, rapid fire (barrel smoking) has not resulted in any malfunctions.
Not sure I would take it to war (also not sure why I wouldn't) but it has been reliable and very well put together. I have not had to deal with customer service, so I can't comment on that.

A major fan of Stag Arms. The lovely wife and I both, own multiple Stag uppers and three lowers. Some I built some Stag built, never an issue from day one with any of them. Never owned or had much experience with the S&W offering
