Can it be done? Is it possible to design an ambi xcr/acr type of bolt release on an ar15 lower?
I've seen many improvments on the AR series of rifles but never the xcr/acr style bolt release where it is right behind the mag well/in front of trigger.

The Magpul BAD or Phase 5 Tactical / Tango 5 EBR accomplishes this to a large extent.
Also, IIRC the Magpul lowers (rarer than hen's teeth and twice as expensive) had such a feature. They look suspiciously a lot like the POF billet lowers. The release isn't where you mention but it is ambidextrous. The KAC SR15 E3 rifles also have an ambi release.
Correct me if I'm wrong Rob - but the lowers that have ambi bolt releases were specially designed - it's not a drop in piece is it?
That's correct.
POF standard non-ambi lower

POF lower with Ambi release (note the extra cut above the magazine release button)

FWIW, I contacted ROBARM a while back about designing an AR lower with a XCR-style ambi bolt release. They said that they had some designs in the works.
rob, is it possible use the POF ambi bolt catch with your trigger finger to hold the bolt back manually? (sort of like the xcr/acr where you push up on the catch and pull the bolt back...)
On the POF I don't know but I don't think so. On the KAC it is not.
And Grant was kind enough to post a pic of the KAC on another thread!

thats a negative on the magpul/pof lowers being a bolt catch
They are only bolt release.
I have an AR book that shows you how to mill a lower for an ambi bolt release. Not for the faint of heart. I really wish the Robinson guys would roll their technology into a standard AR platform.
