It was, absolutely, the selector's indentation. A very glaring difference could be seen between the selector's indentation for safe and fire. Fire was uneven, and generally sloppy in appearance, thus translating into a sloppy performance.
After drilling on the fire indent on the selector switch itself, I broke the drill bit, but not before making some progress. Once reinstalled, the click was more reassuring, but I wasn't able to finish the job; however, it revealed what the problem was.
So, I ordered a G&R Selector this morning, and thanks to my homie in Oregon, install will be very non-labour intensive.
