Some nice work there on cutting down the standard front sights.
Not true. There are many different techniques out there ranging from clamps to set screws and dimples to pins and mixes of techniques. Noveske for example uses a mix of set screw and 1/8" straight pin on their SS barrels. One could even run a taper reamer through the 1/8" hole and run a taper pin with it.
Really? I'm pretty sure that the FSP is attached with taper pins in most "reputable" ARs, there may some that use straight, none of mine have. http://www.fulton-armory.com/AR-15Diagram.htm look at the diagram it is small but I'm pretty sure it says "taper pins"
Noveske uses straight "dowel pins". The steel in "dowel pins" are hardened, they will be of stronger steel than both your barrel and gas block.
Steel alloy dowel pins 1/8" x 3/4" Grade 8 could be used. It would be best to drill undersized and ream the hole a few thousands under and press fit the dowel. This way the pin won't walk it's way out. Press in = Press out.
