Are they a top tier suppressor in terms of sound reduction?
all the data I've seen has shown the YHM suppressors as being a top value.. but not a top performer.
Any links?
all the data I've seen has shown the YHM suppressors as being a top value.. but not a top performer.I own RDTS, Flemming, AAC, STG, Gemtech, SCR, Vector and YHM cans. IMHO the YHM are not only the best value but perform just as well as the AAC and the Gemtech. As a matter of fact I have less POI change with the YHM then with both the AAC and Gemtech. I have never taken any scientific measurments comparing sound reduction but I am of the opionion that sound reduction is comperable between the YHM, AAC and Gemtech of the same caliper on the same platform. FYI my next supressor purchase will also be from YHM.
Very good suppressors. They are a little heavier than others. The newest Phantom and SS Phantoms weigh 20oz (same as a Gemtech G5). They sound similar to me to the Gemtech G5. The flash hider mounts while kind of ugly works very well. YHM suppressors are a good value for the money.
Everything YHM makes is "good enough for the money". This includes their sights, rails, all their accessories and even their suppressors. Ever notice that people almost always saying things like, "it is a great product for the money" or "its the best product for the price" or even "its the best value".
The sound of their suppressors is, for the most part, okay. In some cases the sound of their suppressors is even a little better than some of the competition. Where they often fall short (IMHO) of being a "best of breed" product is in materials, construction, etc. Their is a difference in grades of SS for example. But the problem is you will never convince the typical bargain shopper who is only motivated by price tag.
One example is over on ar15.com where some idiot was actually arguing that a YHM SS 5.56 suppressor would last the same firing schedule as an AAC M4-2000 with a full Inconel core. It is simply not possible. The Inconel material will outlast the SS material. It withstands the heat and fights the erosion better. There is simply no arguing about it yet some idiot YHM fan doesn't want to admit that his product has inferior materials. That isn't to say his YHM suppressor won't serve him well for a long time. It is just a fact that the one material is superior in erosion resistance than the other material. Yet the guy continues to argue. Makes him look like a moron really.
Buy once cry once, but don't overbuy. If the YHM product does what you want it to do, go for it. It is a "good value" after all. :)

Sure... I have some links.

Sign up for the $30 review access. Read the spreadsheets listing dB ratings as well as per cubic inch sound reduction as well as weight comparisons. YHM doesnt dominate any of them.
I also own 4 suppressors and have heard many others. I'm not saying the YHM's are bad, but they arent top of the line. Not everyone needs the best (or the most expensive) just to pop crows or whatever.
I shot a YHM today. 5.56 Phantom Stainless.
I think I'll go after a GemTech G5-T.
From everything I've heard, they perform, but are big and heavy. Not so desirable for walking around with, but as their sales indicate, there's a market for durable, effective suppressors at that price point. VLTOR's Volks can should fit well in there too.
I have owned sound suppressors manufactured my AAC, Gemtech, and YHM. The one thing that turns me on about YHM's Suppressors are that they offer a lifetime warranty against defects (which is very important when spending the $200 for the stamp) and that they are not afraid to publish their sound reduction data. While I agree undoubtedly that there are better suppressors on the market, I would be hard pressed not to continue to purchase YHM Suppressors because of not only what I listed above but their overall value ($$$$$) when compared to other manufacturers.
Good Luck!
Your comment about YHM's warranty makes it sound like they are the only manufacturer to offer such a warranty when in reality ALL the major top tier guys offer the same thing. All the other guys publish their sound test data as well. So, what exactly is YHM doing that the other guys aren't?
I wish GemTech would publish their sound data. I want it nao.
Ive been pretty happy with my first gen YHM QD phantom 5.56. The sound levels are what i expected and i havent had any real issues with it. It would be nice to not have the blowback but you will see that with most any suppressor. If there are any specifics you want to know ill try to help you out.
I have the original Phantom 5.56 can. It is something like 25 oz of weight. That's heavy and even more so on a heavy-barrel 10.4" HK416. It's more weight than I want for extended periods of time on call-outs etc. I joked with Grant that I could use just the can as a weapon if need be.
It performs fine in my opinion (no numbers on db reduction etc - I am not that hung up in that parameter).
Just talked to Grant about a new Surefire Mini and will be purchasing one after seeing the can in person. Big difference in size and weight plus the Surefire reputation for quality. I also like the attachment method better. I e-mailed Garin (Surefire suppressor guy) the other day asking about barrel length supported etc. Garin responded back promptly with a lengthy and thoughtful answer about the product. I was impressed by that.
If you are using the can for work, I'd recommend taking your time to check out the cans and pay more for reduced weight and size. I have AAC cans as well in .22 and 7.62 and love them, but the Surefire Mini seems to be in a class of its own for now for a quick detach 5.56 can.
My $.02
I owned a SureFire suppressor.
I like them, but probably wont get another.
I want more sound reduction.
I have a 7.62 and love it. I also use it on my M4. 5.56 stainless on order. Like the QD.
The thing I can say about SF suppressors that I love are their lack of POI shift.
I've shot a 6.8 suppressor by them that had no POI shift. It was amazing. :D
For what most people are going to be doing, YHM will probably be fine. That said, when buying what's virtually a life-long purchase (since used cans have about zero resale value), I'd personally spend another couple hund-o.
I know a guy who uses a YHM 5.56 can on his M16 for FA blasting as to not wear out his more expensive M4-2000.
I did handle the new Surefire mini can today. That thing is tiny! I can't justify a third 5.56 can though, especially one with a completely different mounting system.
I'm wondering if a YHM Phantom would be ok to use on a Shrike. It's rated full auto, but still, a Shrike can kick out a lot of lead, and therefore a lot of heat.
As of soon I will be adding a GemTech G5-T to my suppressor collection - - -
5.56x45:
KAC QDSS-NT4 (Might buy another)
Ops Inc. 15th Model CQB MBS
Ops Inc. 12th Model SPR
GemTech G5-T (Soon) (Training can)
6.8x43 SPC:
AAC SPR/M4
AAC M4-2000
SureFire FA68K (Training Can)
SureFire FA68AR
9x19 Para:
AAC Evolution - 9
AAC Ti-RANT 9
GemTech Tundra (Training Can)
SilencerCo. Osprey 9
The rest are ''Service Suppressors''. As I call them.
My collection is almost complete. :D
6.8x43 SPC:
AAC M4-2000
SureFire FA68K
I want to get one of those myself, I hunt deer with a suppressed 6.8 and my AAC Cyclone is way too heavy to haul around the woods on my 16" barrel.
The SureFire has almost no POI shift.
The AAC has VERY little POI shift on my LWRCi and is VERY quiet.
People who were about 15 yards away from me couldn't hear me shooting it (ETA: Didn't notice.) with Cor-Bon 115 gr. Subsonic HPBT.
I highly recommend the AAC as a Service Suppressor and the SureFire as a Training Can.
I get a lot of shooting in with it. The SureFire is DAMN durable.
I haven't ran a 5.56mm one on my SBR, I'd like to a lot though.
I have a M4-2000 Mod. 08 in 6.8x43 and it's a beast.
If you're running 5.56mm suppressors though I don't think you can get better than KAC or Ops Inc.
What's the difference between the Mod. 07 and Mod. 08? I've never shot the 07.
So functionality wise it's the same?
Sound reduction, weight, materials, function. etc.
And Olympic Arms and Kel Tec also offers this type of warrantee. Meaningless horse shit. I'm not lumping YHM in with those bottom feeders... I'm just saying... If you buy based on warrantee in the gun realm, you're going to end up with a lot of junk guns.
I'd rather buy a good product with no warrantee.
Me too, it's works fine which is all I care.

That gun is beautiful.
Is that an M4S sleeve on your RDS?
