well wolf is underpowered too so its not like shooting XM/M193
yes.. but not unheard of. with NATO ammo and an aggressive firing schedule, you shouldn't be upset if you only get 6,000 rounds on a bolt. that doesn't mean you won't get twice that, or more, however. this, like everything durability related, is subject to luck.
with weak ammo and a light schedule, the sky is the limit. if he'd cleaned that thing every once in a while he probably would have gotten even more life out of it. lugs break as a result of pitting on the rear end of the lug.. if you clean often, you slow the pitting, and increase life.
i'm not sure what his firing schedule was. like i said i'll ask him all about this experiment when i see him next.
i think neglecting to clean his rifle while shooting the dirtiest ammo around was the whole point of the experiment though.
i shoot that tula ammo from cabela's all the time now. ($4 a box)
it's the same as wolf, but great for running drills and such. i give my carbine a proper cleaning after 1,000 rounds. after every outing i wipe down the bolt, put a snake through the bore, and lube everything up again. a few thousands rounds through it so for and the bolt looks great still, (it's a BCM bolt though). my firing schedule is about 300 rounds every sunday. not at all what some of you guys run through, but not a safe queen either. it definitely get expensive though.:D
Oops... NM
Yup. A lot of us with the military background had certain ideas drilled into our minds, like, "take care of your rifle and it'll take care of you". The culture of keeping all gear in the highest state of cleanliness stays with you when you become a civilian gun owner. There's an imaginary arms room sergeant in our heads whose exacting inspection we will have to pass before we can "turn it in".
I stabbed my imaginary arms room Sergeant in the face and killed his ass around 1 year ago, and proceeded to run my carbines dirty and wet.
Really helped relieve the stress that built up over several years, and countless hours, of sticking thousands of Q-tips in every nook and cranny of the rifle/carbine until it came out white:D
I think everyone should murder that imaginary son of a bitch!;)
I'll get you with my shrink... The PTSD psychotropics are off the hook! :p
Not that there doesn't need to be a killin', it just "feels" better...
... that was a joke... No, yes, maybe, we'll yes I definitely believe so... Wait, not really.
