I'm wanting to get a really nice lower to go with my first SBR. I'm not a fan of billet (mostly weight and price), and I'm just looking for something with a really nice fit and finish. Strictly looking for a stripped lower too, so LMT is out.

Mil spec/bcm/noveske/kac/dd/colt.
Too bad you said stripped because if I were to pick a lower that I could never sell, it would undoubtedly be a SR-15 lower.

Noveske is selling matched uppers/lowers for $275. That's going to be the foundation for my SBR. Waiting for the Sheriff to sign off on my Form 1 as we speak.

The Noveske is a good deal. G&R Tactical had stripped Daniel Defense lowers for around $125 last time I was looking their flared mag well is kinda cool. You could always buy the LMT and strip it yourself. I assume you want to strip it so you can send it to the engraver. With some you can leave the buffer tube on. I was looking at engraving the inside if the trigger well.
Noveske or KAC are my picks. There are quite a few quality lower receivers on the market, but most of them have terrible roll marks. I hate to sound like a girl here, but if I'm going through the trouble and expense to SBR a piece of aluminum, I don't want a stupid logo on it. YMMV...
KAC complete lower.
If I was going stripped I'd use a MEGA.
At least nobody suggested any of that billet crap...
People are most often simply going to suggest what they have without much in the way of explanation of why they prefer that particular part. I have a small collection of stripped lowers, as well as the lowers on complete guns. Generally speaking there is nothing to differentiate one from the other, and in those cases Nick's criteria of roll mark is as good as any other for selection.
There are a few lowers that do stand out for one reason or another. The KAC mentioned is an obvious one with it's ambidextrous controls. the Daniel Defense is another that was mentioned with it's flared magazine well.
My pick is the SLR15 lower from Sully at Defensive Edge. I'm having a hard time finding Sully's writeup right now but there are several machining steps that they take that set them apart. I'll try to find the writeup later. The short version is that they have a flared magazine well, not as aggressive as the DD, but more so than your standard lower.
I know sully posted here about it. I'm going to try and track down the post.
I really like the coating on MEGA receivers and they're now only $100.

Don't have any experience with this one but I really like the gear roll mark. Maybe the powers that be should start selling an M4C version.

I think rob is right, most just suggest what they have. In practical experience I have owned Bushmaster, DPMS, Tactical Innovations and BCM.
I presently only have the TI and BCMs … the others are gone.
I have 2 of the Tactical Innovations T15s are awaiting NFA stamps.
So I personally think they are OK as it would evidence.
In addition to the normal quality you'd expect on a good forged lower they are understated (no roll mark and gaud), pictographic fire/safe (I just like it), well finished, local biz, good people.
Practically, any of the 6 or 8 top vendors discussed will work fine enough (and surely a number of others).
Honestly, my new rule of thumb when it comes to ARs: If Cabela's/Sportsmans Wearhouse/etc carries it … think twice.
I think it is a good point we suggest what we like and have experience with. I do not own a DD or Noveske but rhink they are two of the best deals I have seen layltely. I would like to some day. I've owned Colt and Bushmaster in the past and own LTM & BCM today.
I can not think of any of the names of lowers I've seen in the past but I agree with you I like the understated lowers with the least markings. Just my preference.
Stay with a well known and established brand with a track record and you will be good to go. I cringe at some of the pre '86 full auto recivers I've seen recently for sale. 8K for a nasty looking thing that looks like a kid applied the markings. I am sure folks were working around the clock to make those recivers with little sleep.
Find something you like and have fun. We want to see you pictures when you are done with it.
S&W sells a good looking lower with no cal markings if you'd like that.
Man now you have me thinking about buying a few to just put away for a rainy day.
I have a Tactical Innovations for the rollmark reasons.
I hate most of them. The TI doesn't have one.
