I ended up running a patch through it and it came out easily. It was a small shaving and very thin. I will put it together and report back here as to if it turned out to be a turd or not.

Really? Your Maxima allegory is not even close to relevant. The Maxima is a decent reliable car, built competently. His DPMS is junk, built by a company that doesn't even try to build ARs right. I fail to see how offering advice on salvaging a junk carbine is relevant to M4C's mission.
Do we 'ums have a sense of entitlement? I gave you good advice my very first, second and third post. Which you blew off. So, why do you deserve an answer to your question, again?
I was refering to me coming here to ask a simple question, and getting pounced on about buying a DPMS kit.
I just asked a question. I looked at everyones opinion to help me decide what to do. No need to get all fired up and turn into a "keyboard Commando"
If this the wrong site to ask advice then let me know, and I will ask someplace else. Its not that big of a deal.
Its just a simple/crude comparison. It may have been nice in '96 but now, 14 years and 180K miles later is a beater. I bought it to be a beater to keep miles off my "race car" Same as this guy bought a DPMS to keep "miles" off his Noveske and so on.
I don't think the mission of M4C is to bash people for their purchases be they mistakes in your eyes or not. The mission it to educate and share infromation between individuals interested in the same things.
I see this stuff on my car forums a lot as well. Some posts a question on how to install a torque converter and a bunch of people yell at him about his TCI is a piece of shit and he should have bought a Yank or what have you.
Just answer the question the OP asked. Sheesh.
When I first came on here and said that I got a BM because I had few choices living in NJ after BHO was elected and new even less about the AR before comming to this site no one bashed me. I was simply told what I needed to fix to make it run. This is why I stayed with this site. If people came on and just made fun of me what would I have learned? Nothing aside that "the people are M4C are asshats" which is not true in the least. Instead my questions were answered and I am now better for knowing that stuff. Why can't you just do the same?
i stopped reading once it turned into an argument, so forgive me if this has already been covered.
burrs can be shot through. i have a brass rod that i shaved to a point on one side that i use for the occasional burr.. i'll knock out what wants to come out, then shoot it smooth. fact of the matter is, people probably shoot through burrs every day in America.. with all these shitty factory guns out there, probably most of them with burrs in the barrel, and the types that buy them not bothering to clean/inspect before shooting..
many moons ago, i was taught that a gas port burr could cause a squib, blow up a barrel, ruin a barrel in several different ways, etc. but i've since learned that even high quality barrels like Sabre often come burred, and that the manfers always say shoot through it. i have, and my barrel didn't blow up, nor was it ruined, and i've suffered no squib rounds.
as to the whole "beater gun" idea.. i've done that. what i've found is that it pretty much makes no difference. you will shoot the guns you like, and not shoot the ones you dont. so build a beater gun, put cheap shit on it, and it'll get shuffled to the back of the safe. you'll quickly realize, once the gun is in your truck and becomes the gun that's most likely to be used in a self-defensive situation, that it's pretty much the last gun you want to be with you all the time.
so my "beater gun," "truck gun," "goes with me everywhere and has wear spots all over it and dents and nicks and gouges all over it gun," is a 10.5" LMT, and has more money in it than any other complete gun i currently own.
Spanky,
I'm with you. I can't understand why guys here claim not to understand the concept of a "beater". But then again, I own a German Weatherby that looks the same as the day I bought it 35 years ago...because I only use "beater" rifles for back woods hunting. Unless WW3 breaks out so that vanity and pride go out the window, why trash an expensive weapon.
But GodBless this place. Did you ever try having a heated debate or end up getting off topic on Web Sights like The High Road for example? The little dictator moderators there with their little frustrated unic dicks will shut the thread down and/or threaten to expel you.....very regularly. I'll take this place anyday where everybody is freely entitled to their own stupid opinion. :D
OK.....back to your topic. I bought a Fulton 308 barrel to hold it up to the light at every angle to see a bur at the gas port, and was pretty darn upset about it. (ie" $380 worth of upset!) Luckilly, I had a Hawkeye borescope to examine it up closely. Lo and behold, the borescope revealed that there was absolutely nothing there. Perhaps it was just my particular set of 55 year old eyes that do this sought of thing, and your eyes aren't doing this same optical illusion to you. (??)
LOL. Where on earth did I get the balls to try and think for myself? Thanks for the feedback from everyone. I will let you folks know how it turns out. Sorry to those (or the one I should say) that got there panties in a bunch for me buying a cheap project gun. To satisfy you kind sir I will only buy high end rifles already assembled and never attempt to tinker with a home built gun ever again......yeah friggin right .
I am curious to see if it turns out well or not. My LMT SBR will always be my favorite, but I will have at least learned something while attempting to make this $400 rifle kit work. I've paid alot more than that for classes in college in which I have learned useless things.
Thanks again guys,
Spanky
