i've only shot a few rounds out of an ar with a silencer and from what i remember it was still pretty loud although the sub sonic loads were pretty quiet. so why spend the money?
i'm pretty new here so forgive me if this is a stupid question.

I know it would help me where I shoot we get lots if noise complaints. It also helps protect your hearing with and with out hearing protection. Flash suppression is also a benefit. In a tactical situation it is nice if the bag guys do not know exactly where you are until you can give hem a lead asprin. And there is also the just because you can argument.
Noise, recoil, flash reduction.
Even though a supressed 5.56 is still far from "silent" it usually brings the noise level down to safe levels. If you're in the business of killing not so great people, the supressor makes it difficult to figure out where the sound is comming from. Obviously flash and recoil reduction are always good things.
They're also just plain fun to have.
The way people look at me when I go to the range and shoot it makes it worth every penny.
Well for one I can only ASSume that the suppressor you fired wasn't so great. I can tell you the the difference between my SBR suppressed and unsuppressed is huge.
If you want to be a real believer do this little test. Go into an enclosed space with a 16" carbine and fire 10 rounds. Then do the same with a 10.5" SBR. Then put a good suppressor in place and do the same. BTW- did I forget to mention you can't use ear plugs?
The difference will be immediately noticeable. Do the same drill at night time.
When shooting with night vision devices it lessens the amount of white-out you get after firing.
When a guy kicks in my door, or smashes my window at 3 am, my suppressor will make sure if I have to make multiple shots then my night vision won't be impaired and I won't go deaf. Also the slight accuracy bonus that some cans can give.
Oh, and they're ****in' bomb to have.
The rules of engagement in today's PC world are: Don't draw attention to yourself. Enter, work and leave quietly.
Lots of different reasons, but to be perfectly honest, I just wanted one, then another... and another.......
Because shooting unsuppressed is just uncivilized.
