Pros: it's lighter and shorter
Cons: it's a hassle to remove the muzzle device and you lose a small amount of velocity. The pinning is for legal reasons to meet the 16" barrel length requirement, not for performance.
There isn't enough affect on accuracy to notice until you get out to a pretty long range, I'd say past 300m or so, then the 16" may do a bit better than the 14.5"
If there were NO NFA restrictions, I'd run a 14.5 for general purpose. 14.5 is a great barrel length. Some people can't/don't want to pay for the tax stamp... so they just go perm.
In some states, the AWB never died. Threaded barrels might kill all by themselves and we have to cover them with a Muzzle Break and pin it, concealed flash being another evil feature. So given that I have the choice of NO muzzle device or a pinned one without regard to barrel length. I carefully choose what and how I want to do an upper, then leap and weld. I like the PWS-556 FSC and the Battle comp. I take a look at my goal for the upper and decide what barrel length I want based on velocity needs. My next build will be a light (thin) 16"Middy with a Battlecomp and a Troy TRX EX Barrel nut. I'm still thinking over the gas block.
Just another opinion...

I prefer it for my non SBR carbine types because....
1) Like others have said its handier and lighter.
2) I dont want all my guns at 10-11 inchs.
3) Avoid having to SBR the lower.
It's a long read...but worth it. This thread (Cam, you were one of the contribs....damn your pix!) pushed me over the edge on buying a 14.5" middy. I am SO HAPPY I did. It shoots so damn smooth!
In 2001 I had Kurt cut down my 16inch barrel to 14.7
After I got it back I swore I never would go 16inch again
I find the 14.7 and 14.5 more handy compared to the longer 16.1+A2FH
If I didnt have todo all the paper work and engrave my lower
I would give up my 14.5 + Phantoms and go 11.5 or 10.5
Or better yet a 9 inch 6.8 :)
