I am building a 14.5 carbine. I have a DMPS upper and barrel assy, less the BCG. My question is: do I need to stay with DMPS or can I use another brand BCG?

If you're going to switch to a BCM carrier and bolt, you might want to have the headspacing checked before firing. My gunsmith charges $20 for that (his minimum charge) or you can buy your own go/no-go gauges for about $40.
Get a full auto carrier from BCM LMT or DD.
When I picked up the upper, I also got the bolt. I am guessing they are a matched set. So, my thoughts are to buy a Bcg and swap out the bolts and have it headspaced. any other suggestions. I haven't touched an AR in 42 years.

buy either: bcm, lmt, dd, dennys
Rainier Arms is carrying branded BCG that is MPI/HPT for a reasonable price.
+1 on the BCM bcg
Buying a quality BCG from bravocompanyusa.com would be the most important expenditure to your DPMS upper. Next, get a quality lower from the same company or Daniel Defense lower from G&RTactical or Smartgunner.com.
