I wouldn't suggest putting your finger through the FSB even with tape on it. When firing only a mag or two (though in the winter I suppose it would take more) the FSB and handguard cap are way too hot to touch. I try to always wear gloves when firing but I especially do when firing a carbine length gas system with FSB and no VFG since it is easy for your hand to slip forward and touch the handguard cap, FSB, or barrel.
I have some with VFGs, some with stubby VFGs (used as a handstop), one with a KAC hand stop, and some with none. On short handguards I prefer the VFGs (if there are large accessories on the side rails) or none. On longer handguards I prefer the stubby VFGs, hand stop, or none.

I admit to being a novice in the AR world, but I added a DD VFG and I'm quite happy with it.
I find the rifle easier to hold for extended shooting periods; but understand, my extended shooting periods are all stationary at an indoor range.
...
I have gone back and forth between a VFG and a handstop.
If I am looking at the system for just shooting, i rock a Handstop.
However if I am looking at more real world applications I use a VFG.

you're definitely going to hurt yourself doing this.. if you revert to this technique accidently during a high round count class or something you're gonna be hitting the ER.
you might wan to consider a rifle length rail or a dissipator (BCM has a nice one with a middy gas system) if you like having your hand out further like that.
Gotta say hooking the finger inside the FSB in one I haven't seen before; not sure I want to either.
I don't use a VFG; I gave the AFG a go, but soon went back slick. Sights, sling and a light are the only things on my carbines these days.
I tried one when they first came out, for about a month. It just didn't feel right after having years of using a TD VFG, so I switched back.
Gear sector hand stops, they just work better. VFG for me just doesn't feel right. After trying many styles and manufacturer's VFG's just add extra weight/bulk.
Don't like em one bit. I just leave the JP/Vtac rail bare cept for the light mount, and the sling pivot works for a handstop.
