You shouldn't be moving for the sole reason of owning an SBR... There are more things in life.
Pick where you want to move, DISREGARDING FIREARM LAWS. Then look at their firearm laws. If bullshit, move on to another choice. Repeat until a place that fits your needs AND your firearm law wants is found.
Firearm laws are the first thing I look for in a state to reside. It indicates how much our other freedoms are respected.
My two cents...If owning an SBR dictates where you will live then you need to reevaluate things.
I'm just sad that you guys in states other than California seem to aquire SBR so easily.
LMAO have fun with your little toys
A SBR does not dictate where I live. Ask a simple question get a lecture. I think you read into this one a little too much. That would be like me moving to New York becasue I'm Buffalo Bills fan :jester:
I love Northern California and I have been lucky enough to have more than most people my age. I've done really well for myself and family in CA in this economy. I'm in my 20's and the first generation born in California. Most of my relatives live 2,000 miles or more away and some I have not seen for years. People get old and die and sometimes it sucks not seeing them as often as you'd like.
Gun laws suck in CA and they're getting worse. I guess there are always going to be pros and cons. Most eastern and mid-western states are . . . well I'm going to leave that one alone.
Even with a letter from a Sheriff you can't privately own one in CA.
Have fun with your little rifles AZ, KY, AS . . .
P.S. How about sound supressors? I'd take one of those
Florida. Easy to own all NFA items with a trust and great weather.
Oregon. Better weather than ''always ****ing sunny and hot'' Florida.
I hate the damn heat.
WA has good gun laws. I'm sure you'd feel right at home up here.
WA says no SBRs, and suppressors can't be used. But can be bought. That's lame. I love WA (Tacoma) but I won't live there again. :|
BTW: Did red_star_republic come from the state you live in?
I like it. :)
Yeah, sunshine and warm translucent Caribbean water really suck. 60s to 70s with no clouds in the sky during the Winter really sucks.
Other things that suck are the lack of state income tax, best concealed carry law on the books (and the original Shall Sign law), and wide-open ability to own title-2 firearms.
Sorry to intervene fella's, oregon is probably one of the prettiest places in the nation, and Florida isn't really that hot. Especially after you move there from phoenix! I would move to either. Oregon is closer to home, but there is the whole Oregon attitude thing that bugs me, and Florida has bugs that bug me.
To each his own. I love my california, in spite of its gun laws.
Southern and eastern oregon are extremely dry and sunny.
I'll just comment that what I love about this part of Oregon is that it 2-3 hours and you have your choice of rivers, coastlines, mountains, snow, and high deserts. Pretty varied state in terms of geography.
I didn't move for the gun laws, but they're pretty nice regardless.
In the last 3 years I have lived in Washington, Arkansas, Florida, back to Arkansas.
As for gun laws AR and FL are great. WA no SBR's no Shooting suppressed but owning suppressor is OK. AR, you can hunt with your short barreled , suppressed M16 if you want to.
Washington weather, the West was too wet, the East was too dry and the Central had too much snow for me.
Florida weather...............Uhh, well the year I was there may not have been a great one to judge it by. The end of October the temps were still in the 90's and I was not enjoying the humidity at all. The winter got cold enough that the strawberry crops were freezing and many of the tropical type plants I saw turned to this nice brown goo. Also, it rained nearly every day for the entire month of August (thunder storms, not all day). One three day period later in the year we got nearly 12" of rain.
So far I am liking AR the best. The weather is great with 4 nice seasons. A nice amount of precipitation, not too cold of a winter, and the hot part of summer doesn't last too long. Have been close to a couple tornadoes and went through an ice storm though.
There are of course many other things to consider. Cost of living, taxes, housing prices, wages, INSECTS!
It seems all states are trying to tax themselves into prosperity. Low/High cost of living seems directly linked to low/high wages. Also the places that have great or low housing prices seem to have little opportunity for work.
I have also noticed that an area that has many work opportunities in a certain profession, which initially looks like a good thing, usually will have low wages vs. the average for that profession.
I will say that when I consider moving to a state the first thing I look at are the gun laws. However something else is usually the initial reason for considering the move in the first place. Just like the OP who is doing well where he is but may move to be closer to family. When he does move it will most likely be to an area that has a compromise of work, vicinity to family and pro gun laws and probably in that order.
I escaped from Kalifornia to Arizona and I like it. We have very good gun laws, self defense laws and weather.
Geez, I've lived here in Indiana my entire life. Within 1/4 mile of where I grew up.... probably has something to do with the family farm is here, and we've been farming the same land since 1834.....
Indiana has awesome gun laws, only thing we cant have is SBS.... you can blame John Dillenger for that lol....
Ive got 2 SBR's already, and putting $$$ back towards getting my first Can.
Indiana is a Shall Issue Personal Protection State. You can open carry or conceal carry, your choice.
I dont think your crazy. For some of use personal freedom is a big issue. I often dream about moving out west. Not just for the gun laws but for the hunting and the life I see my self leading.
Best of luck. IraqGunz is right AZ is real nice I have been there a few times, I like the northen part of the state.
Not necessarily. We make decisions based upon what is important to us and the way we live. For some people firearms are a huge consideration.
I myself will NEVER live in a non NFA state because I'm not willing to live without my NFA weapons.
Looks at how many people are moving to CA for the marijuana laws. How many move to states with more social programs so they can live at the expense of others?
I know a LOT of people who care about firearms and finally just got fed up with ALL of the CA gun bullshit and left good jobs and a nice house in order to have a little more personal freedom. I don't see anything wrong with that kind of decision.
If firearms are your hobby and your passion, choosing a state to live in based on the gun laws is perfectly reasonable, not even including the freedom issues, etc.
California is a nanny state in far more ways than just gun laws, but the gun laws are certainly indicative of just how stupid a state it is.
What other state allows you purchase a Phoenix Arms or Hi Point pistol, but call a 6" S&W Model 19 or a blue Colt Python an unsafe "Saturday Night Special" and ban their sale, (but if you're a cop, they're somehow perfectly safe)?
no rifle carry in vehicles
no pistols in vehicles without CHL
no full auto
no SBRs
cannot "use" suppressors
no carry in bars
all of these are legal in Oregon. in fact, Oregon, with the exception of requiring a permit for concealed carry, defers to federal law on EVERYTHING. if it's legal anywhere in the USA, it's legal in Oregon.
Utah. The Brady Bunch gives our state a perfect zero for our gun laws.
"What is the best state to move to for owning SBR's?". Why just that, "any" SBR friendly state.
MadDog :sarcastic:
We can own class 3 in NV.
I like Kentucky. Warm Summers and some snow in the Winter (like this morning...), always a nice spring and cool, crisp fall.
Plus, we got lots o' crap to shoot at... ;)
Aww, heck;
What do we rednecks know 'bout them 'lil boomstix? All we do is get drunk and blast our shotguns out the windows while jammin' out to ACDC and Jamie Johnson, respectively... And that's just on the highways. It gets wild down on the farm :)
I will back up my state so I will say caugh "North Dakota" Caugh. You can own pretty much anything with the right permit. Not only that but there is PLENTY of wide open area to shoot. And we have one of the lowest unemployment rates of the country. Thats if you can stand the cold.:D
Kentucky is great and gun friendly plus you have all four seasons. I moved here from Georgia which is also a nice state and gun friendly with the exception of Atlanta. No complaints about the bluegrass.;)
I'd be looking to get out of California too, but not just for their silly gun laws. That state is circling the drain. Taxes are going to go up and services are going to go down. Except for illegal immigrants, which appear to be legal there. They don't have to pay taxes, and are entitled to a large-and-increasing percentage of the services.
Lot's of reasons for a Californian to be looking at moving out.
I'll secound that!!!! Even as a cop in California the gun laws suck!!! You go through a background check thats so extensive that they talk to little jonny your friend from fifth grade... And then they still wont allow you to buy a simple AR-15 without a letter from a Chief or Sheriff..... Who many time wont sign off on one for fear of Civil liabity....Gotta love California!!!
Kinda wish winter were shorter as of this morning... 7 freakin' degrees and I'm tryin' to drive home from work! This is crazy.
But seriously, we have very gun-friendly laws, we are somewhat central to the US, and have a straight-shot (I-75) all the way to Florida for vacation! Only downfall I see with our system is the stereotype we recieve from all the "gun-show" type sales of firearms. I think people actually believe that we trade Uzi's and RPG's at local swap meets... it's funny to listen to ignorant outsiders talk abobut it.
And most of us wear shoes, just stay clear of Rok-kassel County and Er-vine to avoid actually meeting the people that gave us that stereotype... ;)
Wherever you go, happy living! If you move to Richmond, give me a ring and we can go shoot some crap.
Arizona's gun related laws are pretty sweet, if you don't mind not carrying in a bar or restaurant, you don't even have to get a concealed carry permit!
No one has mentioned Texas yet?
There are almost no restrictions, with the odd exception of open carry being prohibited (But you can open carry 1.on your own property and 2. While hunting), but I like to think most people who carry, carry concealed anyways.
In addition, I can carry a loaded handgun within reach in my car as long as it is out of sight, even if I don't have a concealed carry permit. Long guns can be kept loaded in my car within reach.(Hello FA Suppresed SBR under my seat?)
Also, "Residents lawfully occupying a dwelling may shoot a person who "unlawfully, and with force, enters or attempts to enter the dwelling", or who removes or attempts to remove someone from that dwelling, or who commits or attempts to commit a "qualifying" felony such as burglary, arson, rape, aggravated assault, robbery or murder. In addition, a shooter who has a legal right to be wherever he/she is at the time of a defensive shooting has no "duty to retreat" before being justified in shooting; the "trier of fact" may not consider whether the person retreated when deciding whether the person was justified in shooting."
The lowest scoring state in the annual Brady test:
Utah
