I have a DSA ZM4 upper (M4 style, nitride) which has run like a top (on various lowers), equipped with a BCM carrier group. It definitely prefers H2 buffers which suggests the gas port is largish.
For $710, that rifle is probably a good deal. But if you aren't pinching pennies to get to $710, I would completely agree with ucrt.
I have a couple of DSA FALs and my experience with them has been great. However, I don't think DSA's ARs are anything special.
I couldn't disagree more. No one is making better FAL receivers. Their clearances are a bit finicky at times (my DSA/IMBEL build took some barrel sanding to get the timing just right) but no one else is drop forging them, which is such a better process than casting them, which is what everyone else is doing.
Sorry to hijack the thread, but my paternal instincts kicked in to protect my baby
Carry on.
DSA makes total crap for AR15s.
I owned one. My first gun. I know better now.
While I'd pass on a DSA AR as there are better options out there...
The rest of your statement is woefully misinformed.
Any rifle build is going to take a bit of WECSOGery, but DSA FALs are as good as any other. I've owned and built several, it doesn't really get much better than DSA.
No, not misinformed at all. My sample size has been more than one or two and I've seen firsthand the same quality problems from multiple DSA rifles. From cheap porous metals to headspacing problems to their rail systems being crap, I've seen enough of DSA to know what they're about. You're welcome to disagree, but that doesn't make me wrong.
Actually, I've got at least the same experience. That said have you contacted DSA per forum rules? Do you have some form of documentation of "porous metals" and other serious defects in manufacture? (I'm very curious to know what scientific/metallurgical lab techniques you used) Please share it. Please describe the problems you've had. How big is your sample size? Some further explanation is warranted because it doesn't jive with every person I know that's owned a DSA FAL and has been well satisfied with it.
Apparently LAV also disagrees with you.

That doesn't mean I'd recommend a DSA AR given the multitude of options out there, but I'll run up the bullshit flag on you relevant to their FALs without further information/elaboration.
