If one were so inclined to SBR a M&P 15-22, where or how would the lower be engraved? Can it even be done?
Also, if you have SBRed yours, please feel free to post pics. Thanks.

Why couldn't you engrave it where you normally do for SBR's?
I thought I saw one on LF.net that Kel from Gemtech had done, but I have no idea where he engraved it. The little metal serial number insert isn't big enough to do that. I guess you could just engrave the plastic, since only the serial number has to be in metal, not the manufacturer and city, state.
On a related note, S&W makes a VSBR pistol version of the M&P-15/22. Are the uppers swappable? If so, then you could simply Form 1 the existing rifle lower, then pop on the short pistol upper, and voila!.
You can also engrave the upper or bbl. The bbl is metal so that would be my suggestion.
Found it. You are indeed correct on the marking, only the serial number must be on the receiver. The other info can be on the barrel. I do wonder though, if the requirement for the additional info to be "conspicuously placed" is met if it's on the extension & covered by the stock or on the barrel & covered by a rail.
I still don't see a requirement that the manufacturer or location has to be engraved into metal. Look at how the gun comes from S&W: The serial number is on a metal plate, but everything else is molded into the plastic. Same with any polymer pistol: SN in metal, everything else in plastic.
