If one were so inclined to SBR a M&P 15-22, where or how would the lower be engraved? Can it even be done?
Also, if you have SBRed yours, please feel free to post pics. Thanks.

Why couldn't you engrave it where you normally do for SBR's?
I thought I saw one on LF.net that Kel from Gemtech had done, but I have no idea where he engraved it. The little metal serial number insert isn't big enough to do that. I guess you could just engrave the plastic, since only the serial number has to be in metal, not the manufacturer and city, state.
On a related note, S&W makes a VSBR pistol version of the M&P-15/22. Are the uppers swappable? If so, then you could simply Form 1 the existing rifle lower, then pop on the short pistol upper, and voila!.
You can also engrave the upper or bbl. The bbl is metal so that would be my suggestion.
Found it. You are indeed correct on the marking, only the serial number must be on the receiver. The other info can be on the barrel. I do wonder though, if the requirement for the additional info to be "conspicuously placed" is met if it's on the extension & covered by the stock or on the barrel & covered by a rail.
I still don't see a requirement that the manufacturer or location has to be engraved into metal. Look at how the gun comes from S&W: The serial number is on a metal plate, but everything else is molded into the plastic. Same with any polymer pistol: SN in metal, everything else in plastic.
You're probably right about it, I'd say if they are mum on the subject, it's probably alright, then again we are talking about the government :). My only real concern would be it winding up looking like crap, and who would we get to do it.
I guess we'll find out when I get ready to do mine and put it in the trust. Might let you pick since you'll probably end up with it eventually.
I don't know where we engraved it, but to your original post, it makes a very fun silencer host. Surprisingly quiet, and ours has been very reliable.

Mine runs great.
So I take it you can fit the pistol upper on the rifle lower. Does S&W sell just the pistol uppers? Or do you have to buy the complete pistol and just have a pointless .22 pistol lower lying around?
No, you have too buy both a rifle and pistol. I use my rifle upper on the pistol to get some sort of use out of it, I'm sure you could also sell them, things do break once in a while. I'm also pretty sure you could mount a buffer tube to the pistol receiver if your handy with tools, but then you can never go back to a pistol format.
Cutting the Bbl and rail should be cheaper.
How/where did you engrave your SBR 15-22?
engraving pen on the front of the magwell. The lettering is larger than ATF requires. If they dont like it then they can suggest where I need to engrave it. As long as you engrave it some where on the reciever your GTG. There are no REGS. yet on how to engrave poly, and If 10 people call you'll get 10 diffrent answers.
I'm interested in doing this too. Not even sure how the barrel is removed though. Rail is plastic so cutting, or having it cut, should be easy.
Jason, is the AAC barrel cut just short enough to mount the can or does the can fit slightly back into the rail.
I pm'd Jason after my post above, this was the reply:

Vegas,
Did you end up doing a 15-22 SBR?

Just saw it tonight, it's freaking awesome! If you keep scrolling down Waylon shows how he had to engrave it.
Never did get around to it. It's on the to do list but pretty low down.
Had another guy here in NC build one, and had it laser engraved by Tar Heel State Firearms. Looks great. Mine has been loads of fun. It was the first rifle my 8-year-old ever shot. (His second was a FA suppressed MP5...not sure how many years it will take before he appreciates how lucky he is)

Thanks guys. Looks great. I was worried about getting blasted for a necro post. I was using the search function! =)
This is my next SBR also, I believe Brownell's sells a tool for $25 for removing the barrel. Trying to decide on a can and the barrel length before chopping up the hand
guard.
I sent my stock rifle to Innovative Arms for their SBR/Integral silencer treatment:

Love it.
These guys also sell a bunch of stuff/tools for the M&P15-22, specifically an adapter so you can use "normal" handguards.

I did a 4.5" barrel, with the cut and thread handled by a local shop in the DFW area. Decided on that to keep bulk pack subsonic, and using my Sparrow, so the can would stick out a little bit.

I bought the Tacticool22 barrel tool, and cut the handguard at home, as a temp plan until I figured out the HG, but I dont know if I will make a change. Next up is to find a hand stop that I like better than the RVG.
Thus far I have ran several bulk pack ammo through it, not had a problem yet.

15/22 SBR, 7" barrel
SWR Warlock II can just peaking out of the handguard.
Runs like a sewing machine with CCI SV & AE 45 grain Suppressor ammo!
