The reason I chose the 10.5" is because in a SD/HD situation where everything is normal and the S hasn't HTF, you won't need the long range ballistics that longer barrels give you.
But if the SHTF, my method would be to avoid any gunfight possible which means I won't be engaging long range, BUT with the right ammunition, I can if need be.
In either situation, I get a rifle that handles great, reletively light, set up with all the "tactical goodies", and is very capable short range out to at least 100 yds.
I have two DDM4 V5 twins (one LW and one Government profile), so if I had to have only one it would be a DDM4 V5.
Aimpoint PRO
Vickers Sling
Surefire G2X on VLTOR offset
Troy ambidextrous controls
Troy folding Battlesights
XM193 Ammo
We all have the "ONE" for awhile anyway! Mine currently is a 2 year old frankengun that's been through about 6,000 rounds. It's pretty much a duplicate of my back up.

I like 14.5's or 14.7's and can live within the limitations. 3 of 6 are this configuration.
Start with a well built DI AR (Colt, BCM, DD, KAC, LaRue, LMT) using a 16" mid-length barrel w/Battlecomp and at least 12" FF rail. Aimpoint (w/3x mag on flip mount) and good BIS. Possibly Geissele trigger. 6 pos adj stock. Adj 2 point sling, SF 6 volt light in low profile mount, short VFG, rail covers, good mags (GI w/Magul followers or PMAG).
The Army pretty much answered this question of if could only have one rifle changing the entire force over to the M4. When fully fielded that will be over one million M4's in the hands of your troops.
However, for civilian use, I might recommend going with 16" mid-length.
If you could afford it, perfect optic that comes to mind is the Elcan Spectre DR. 1/4x Variable magnification with a left-side throw lever and variable power output. Awesome optic and well worth the price, it's just a bit too steep for the common man without a serious need for something of this caliber.
As for my rifle:
Noveske 10.5" w/ SWITCHBLOCK
Magpul CTR
KNS Pins
MagPul Trigger guard
Ambi Safty - BAD-ASS
Troy Ambi Mag Release
Geissele SSA
MagPul AFG
Streamlight TLR-2
BCM Gun Fighter Charging Handle - Mod 3
Troy Flip-up front and rear sights
Aimpoint PRO
M4-2000 suppressor w/ appropriate flash hider
PMAGs
BFG VCAS sling
This is basically the specs to the rifle I'm working on starting to build. Being in Afghanistan helps with waiting for my paperwork since I'm stuck out here anyway and can't shoot it. Also, extra money to buy more gun porn for it. Being a lefty, the BAD ASS and Troy mag release are a must for me. I'm tired of reaching all funky to drop a mag, or using my index finger to sweep the safety.
I chose the AFG and TLR-2 because the setup is working quite well for me here. I recently found out that Streamlight sells remote coils for the TLRs, so I may get one in the future.
