Loose Barrel Extension Help
Sooo, I took my complete upper in to have a compensator installed. The gunsmith took the complete upper removed the bolt and charging handle, nothing else, placed it in an action block, tried to remove the A2, and the whole barrel rotated.
Then the upper was stripped to figure out why (it was thought a pin had snapped), and it was discovered that the barrel was unthreading from the barrel extension. The barrel was removed by hand. I watched the whole process, not much force was involved with that initial turn. Manufacturer says it's due to improper gunsmith technique, local guy says it's improperly torqued barrel.
I understand standard procedure is to use a barrel vise, but I last time I checked 150ft/lb for the barrel extension is still greater than the 15-20 for a standard flash hider. So why did the barrel extension unthread first?
My question: How common is this kind of occurrence?
What would you do if it was your barrel/upper? I've been pleased with the rifle thus far, but I'm kind of surprised that this happened, and not much force was involved. It was a 16" barrel, so no reason to think it was pinned.
