So instead of making a new thread and I would think it is smarter to keep this information all in one thread for others as well.
When it comes to ranging, how do you know what part to range. I've read all of the posts here and learned a lot. An example was given earlier at this website http://www.mildot.com/testdrive.htm
The measurements were done by the torso of the Elk and the range was given. I did the math for the torso and was correct. I ranged the entire animal from legs to top of shoulders and completely different answer.
So my question is when you see a human sized target (or any target for that matter). To range it would you measure only the torso or the entire figure to get the accurate range.
Example:
Person is 1.8 meters
Torso is 1 meter
Person- 180cm x 10 = 1800/ 2 mils =900 meters
Torso- 100cm x 10 = 1000 /2 mils = 500 meters
These ranges are completely different. What am I doing wrong?

If you are measuring two body dimensions that you know are different, then you won't come up with 2 mils for both. In your example if the height of a man measures at 2 mils and is 1.8m, then a 1m tall torso will actually measure 1.11mils. It is a simple ratio, (Dimension A) / (Mils A) = (Dimension B) / (Mils B), otherwise you are not measuring it right or your size data is wrong. So your math is:
If using total height: Range = (1.8m/2mils) x 1000 = 900m
If using torso height: Range = (1m/1.11mils) x 1000 = 900m
