1-4x Scope for Duty use?

There is a strong probability in LE you may deploy a weapon in or from/around vehicles.

I also think there is less of a probability this weapon would be a carbine. Most of the times weapons get deployed like that it's the result of a pursuit. With how dynamically those situations end, the odds of deploying a carbine are low, non-existent if it's in the trunk.

I think there is a strong utility for magnifiers in LE, but there are trade offs there too.

I think the guys who work for smaller departments who are given more latitude in weapon selection are way ahead of the curve compared to large departments. Many times it seems big departments can't get out of their own way.

What's the least-expensive 1-4x that could be considered rugged enough for duty use?

Its hard to say because a lot of the newer more affordable scopes have not been tested that hard yet. But I would say the TAC 30 or MTAC or the Vortex 1-4.

Keep in mind I'm keeping my current carbine equipped with an Eotech in my car. This thread was started becasue I have a second rifle that I want to mount a 1-4x scope on.

We are looking at a rack that will hold a carbine and a shotgun on the headliner. This will be a little faster than retrieving it them from the trunk. However, the scoped rifle will still ride in the trunk.

Anyone tried the Nikon m223? The only thing I don't like about it is that it is not illuminated.

I have a burris tac 30 1-4x on my scar17 and a few leatherwood cmr 1-4x scopes on other rifles. In my opinion these are both good scopes. They are illuminated and cost about the same as the nikon m223.

Been off the site for a while but still trying to decide. M223 is down to about $259 on some sites. From what I've read the Point blank reticle is getting mixed reviews. Some say great for up to about 100yd's, but the dot may be too big for anything beyond. Midway now has the 1-4x with a Nikon's BDC600 reticle, but it's getting mixed reviews as well.

Save up and get the TR24G. I would also give the SWFA SS 1-4 with the circle reticle a good look. For a LE patrol rifle, I want something with some reliable illumination. The lack of illumination on the Nikon is a complete deal breakerfor me.

The green tritium on my TR24G has worked great for me in low-light.

You would use the 1x setting for those situations, a 1-4 is even fast in some cases. I keep mine on the 1mag setting and the 4x is there if needed. The added weight and imbalance of the offset is pointless in my opinion.


As for duty use, I know this is sort of an older thread but the top heavyness and just overall weight of a 1-4 makes them less than desirable to me. I have one on my GP rifle 16inch middy.

But on my fighting rifle(I don't like calling it that) right now I have irons but will be putting a RDS on it. I don't know the exact needs of a patrol officer but from my Mil experience and common sense I would believe you wouldn't be shooting at long ranges or want to be entering a house under magnification.

I'd probably be going with a RD and Mag in a twist off mount. At longer distances you can have the mag mounted and then when it comes time to get closer its very quickly removed and placed in pocket.


In another train of thought... I like that you can focus with the variables. I have bad eyes and even up close isn't as clear as it is threw a 1-4.

I'm a Nikon fan; I use Buckmsters on my hunting rifles. I have been kicking around the idea of using a 1x4 for my 3 gun rifle, my first choice was a Nikon M223 simply for the price. I have been shooting Eotechs and irons so the switch to a standard cross hair for my AR seemed odd, even with the BDC.

I was at a local gun shop a few weeks ago and a customer had an AR with a Burris TAC30 mounted on it, I was impressed by the glass and the riticle and how quick I could acquire a target. I did some research on here and found some great reviews so I ordered one from Midway USA. The TAC30 was $299 and the P.E.P.R. mount was $75. Burris also makes the MTAC which is advertised as being more rugged than the TAC30.

Just something to consider for your price range. It may be a better fit for me because the riticle is reminiscent of an Eotech riticle. I should mention I have not yet used the TAC30 for range work; I figure it’s a minimal investment if I don't like the 1x4 route.
