Where in Illinois? There might be opportunites fairly close by that you're unaware of.

A compensator does not allow you to shoot fast. Proper technique allows you to shoot fast and get your hits. When you master that and are then competing against other good carbineros, equipment may well give you an edge.
I have a BC 1.0 on my 16" carbine and I like it very much. Muzzle rise is noticeably reduced, flash suppression, aside from an occasional flare up is decent and concussion isn't much more than an A2 birdcage. As much as I like my BC 1.0, I don't need it to shoot my carbine well
I realize that proper technique and accuracy are the most important aspects. I have done quite a bit of pistol competition at the local level over the years. I understand body mechanics, trigger control, etc. Yes I am new to Three Gun shooting. I am not looking to go out and win any large matches. I want to do this as a sport and hobby to challenge myself. As long as I see improvement I will be happy.
Now when I was into IPSC the local club I used to shoot at lumped all the open and limited folks together. I shot limited. I saw what a comp can do on a open .38 Super or 9X25. I shot some of the guys guns. I could just never afford one. Now I do not know if a Battle Comp will make as much difference as say a pistol does but any advantage is a good one in my eyes.
To answer the question you actually asked, Surefire MB556k, SJC Titan, Benny Hill rolling thunder, JP Cooley comp are probably the most used comps in the 3gun world. There are others out there also. A very cost effective comp is the Miculek comp. It sounds to me that you understand that these will not make you shoot better, they simply shoot flatter. Good luck.
