I use and "absorbent pad" that is adhesive backed and have had it on my bench for a few months and it is holding up great. You can find a couple different styles and sizes but something like the below might work. You can get non adhesive backed as well, but i like that it stays were i put it on my bench and you can cut to size if needed

A little smaller than you wanted but it works great. Can also be used for dog food bowl mats, protects your floors.
