Hey, Mike. Not sure on the water tanks, sorry. But... does your locale have any zoning restrictions, etc.? I ask because it might not hurt to look into a well with mechanical hand pump... it'd be a much more permanent solution and is not very intrusive at all. Just some food for thought.

I seen people use in ground concrete cisterns for a flowing water system but I'm not sure how they would work for long term storage of standing water. Last one I saw up close had a UV light powered by solar to retard bacteria growth and then a simple three stage filter at the tap.
We are all inclined to judge ourselves by our ideals; others, by their acts.

This is a very good suggestion. Contact a local driller and inquire for information on local laws, depths to potable groundwater aquifer, and cost.

Mechanical hand pump you can make yourself:

not an in ground solution but i use several 275 gallon IBC tanks. they are on a plastic pallet with a galvanized cage around the tank. i get them for $75 locally whch is much cheaper than any tank ive looked into out at the farm stores.

I would take a hard look at the cost of a well w/hand pump vs a tank. Also depends on what part of the country you live in and water availability. 3-500 gal tank would not that big but you would have to tear up some area to get it in. Really depends on how tall the tank vs width is.

You might research a sand cistern and see if it meets your needs. Your county extension office should have information pertaining to your area.

You need to check your local laws before you put any in-ground tank in. As a gas station owner and here in GA, ANY tank you bury has to be certified by the GAEPD no matter what the use. Also you cannot leave it empty or they make you dig it up. They want to check on them ever so often and there is a metric ton worth of reoorts that are always required. However you can keep up to a 1000 gal tank above ground no questions asked. Where you live might be different but unless you put it in yourself there may be complications.
