    .308 amax thresholds

what is the expansion/fragmentation threshold of .308 155gr and 168gr AMAX bullet? i have seen many velocities sited all over the forums. any thing from 2200 fps down to 1500 fps. i have to guess that the 155gr and 168gr have different thresholds, probably with the thresholds of the168gr being a lower velocity. i cant get a straight answer! i even asked hornady customer service. i was told that the didn't really know what the velocity threshold was because it was not designed to be an expanding/fragmenting round hence no extensive gel test were done. well, that's funny because here is two right now.

    http://www.hornadyle.com/products/mo...2&sID=79&pID=2 ..........155gr amax

    http://www.hornadyle.com/products/mo...2&sID=79&pID=6 ................168gr

boom...there you go, hornady. gel tests.

although they told me they had not tested them for expansion and did not know the velocity threshold ( lie?) they did tell me if they HAD to guess then it would be around 1650 for the 155gr amax.

why cant i get a real answer here? why is hornady giving me the run around when a ask this question? does anybody know???? what id the REAL expansion/fragmentation thresholds for either of thees two rounds???? any one help me out???

No one knows what the terminal balistics of a sub-1800fps amax would be? why is this unknown information?

    First and foremost, calm down.

Then, drop the sense of entitlement.

It sounds like you spoke with someone in customer service, not a tech in their test lab, an engineer, or a load developer. If the data you seek exists, one of the latter folks outside CS would have it. Hornady has done some pretty exhaustive testing of their TAP lines and bullet technology. Other folks using that AMAX bullet have done so as well. It's a great bullet, and there are folks doing important things with it from various platforms and velocities. Try a different approach and they may pop up and help you. A few are here at M4C.

Finally... If technical info and data isn't available for what you seek, do what the rest of us do: Test it yourself and share with others.

Sorry, no sense of entitlement here. I'm just fustrated with all the google and forum searching only to come up with different answers. I don't thnk I have all the resources to test it in any scientific capacity for my self. I have a lot of amax loads hanging around and they are much more accurate than my other hunting loads, much more. My barrel is a 16" so velocity is already cut down. I wanted to use the amax offerings for varment and preditor control around my farm. The last thing I want to do is wound an animal and have it wonder off to suffer because I was out of my expantion/fragmentation range. Fast humane kills are important to me. even if only on yotes. I am sorry if I came off as an ass. Like I said, I am just frustrated with all the conflicting information out there.

Did you search at longrangehunting.com? Its a fairly popular bullet over there. Use the google search at the top right of the page. After you have done that I think you will have a good awnser.

I hate to bump a necro thread, but I was curious myself, what are the low end thresholds of velocity for 155gr & 168gr AMAX to fragment? Also, if anyone happens to have chrono numbers for MV of 168gr. AMAX out of a SCAR 17s/H 13" barrel I'd appreciate that as well (found another thread where someone had 2,424FPS for 155gr AMAX).

Also hate to bump this thread again but since it is going I would also love to know this and if anyone has some good ballistics gel testing they wouldn't mind sharing that would be great. I am strongly considering moving to the 168 amax across the board for my 308 AR's but would really like a bit more info on the round first.

if memory serves me correctly, Hornady makes the Amax line of bullets with VERY THIN JACKETS. At any range an amax will not fragment, it will open up amd mushroom. One of the reasons long range hunters like the Amax bullet is that extreemly long ranges, it still opens up. If you are interested in Amax bullets, my advise to you is pick a bullet weight that you like and buy all you can afford. The amax is a killer if you put the bullet where it needs to go.

    .308 amax thresholds

Amax bullets are for paper punching not hunting. Hornady makes other bullets for taking game. Hornsby is very clear about the proper use of this bullet.

This will help you pick the appropriate tool for the job.
