The coffee itself, isn't bad. I would probably drop the cream & sugar, if you want to cut out extra calories.

Try to drink it black, or use a small amount of splenda.

    I'm a +1 for black coffee.

The sugar spikes insulin (bad thing) and non-dairy creamer can be full of other ingredients that are no bueno (e.g. soy, hydrogenated oils, corn syrup).

If black coffee is too rough for you, and you still have a need for coffee, try a few dashes of cinnamon. The cinnamon will also help increase insulin sensitivity (good thing - the exact opposite of what the sugar is doing).

I've been drinking it black for a while. You get to love it.

Sucralose (Splenda) and other artificial sweeteners have shown in some studies to spike insulin . Sometimes this is done indirectly, by affecting other factors that contribute to insulin release. Sometime, even with insulin secretion before the "food" even hits your belly. At a minimum it will increase dependency on "sweets".

Splenda, is also "cut" with dextrose, a simple sugar. However, the total calories per packet is below FDA labeling requirements and still qualifies as a zero calorie sweetener.

A "zero" calorie sugar substitute that is cut with.... sugar. Ironic, eh?

I'm sure Mr. Brink will chime in soon, but recent studies have shown black coffee to have some very positive health benefits... In moderation, of course. I'm sure you're already aware that there ARE downsides, or this wouldn't have been a topic to discuss.

The aforementioned spike in insulin. I try and avoid simple sugars in all forms and quantities.

Calories, independently, are not the only measure of whether something is good or bad. Just like calories in/calories out isn't the only metric one should use for nutrition and fat loss.

In the event that a sweetener (artificial or not) would be required for my coffee, I would more than likely opt for honey. Personally, I love black coffee. I drink roughly 3-4 6 ounce cups daily with my morning coffee. The locally roasted "good stuff" when I'm able, Folgers when I'm on a budget.

Side note -- Americanos (one or two shots of espresso with water) are also a good substitute for those that have a hard time swallowing drip, as it was intended. Personally, when I have a 3 shot Americano, I am more satisfied than if I were to have had the 18-24 ounces of drip.

I used to use non-dairy creamer ... until I actually read what was in it. Holy cow! Just my opinion but I figure half and half can't be much worse for you and may even be better.

Seriously, I am going to try the suggestions here about cinnamon and also the honey idea. I must be dense but I never thought of using honey instead of sugar.
