Extremely fast, but he threw some shots. A few were complete misses. At least that's how it appeared on my 27" monitor set for full screen.

I think the new hotness in rifles can be compared to the SUV. It's a Sport Utility rifle. It's got mostly mil-grade parts to ensure that it functions, but it's also got some sport features (Battlecomp, buffer, etc) that make it more competitive in the sport arena. At the end of the day, though, it's the driver that makes the difference.

One more car analogy: You could put a professional race car driver in a street legal Corvette and me in his fully-tuned race car. He's still going to beat me even though I have the better performing car because he knows how to operate/manipulate any car better/faster.
To take it further, the 'lightweight do-everything sort of' rifles are like crossovers - everybody wants one, but it's a compromise on a compromise for most.

My contribution on what I think a go-fast rifle would be:

Noveske or KAC 16" Intermediate Gassed Barrel with a brake
    11"-13" Handguard
S&B Short Dot (or Z6i, or Leupy Mk6)
Geissele trigger on a UBR or VLTOR A5 lower (EMOD or ACS)

If Wes gets any Noveske Inter SS barrels in, I'll have exactly that with a DD handguard, and hopefully a Mk6 optic.

I don't believe gas port makes an appreciable difference and it's something the typical shooter has absolutely no control over (or understanding of, for that matter).

But, to assuage any concerns re: gas port I'm hoping that I can kill two birds with one stone and use the same barrels for my mid-length v. carbine-length test for this project and if all works out well those two barrels will be sourced from the same manufacturer.

I couldn't tell from the computer monitor and these old eyes.
Looked to be previously shot up targets too, which doesn't help.

The comments say the targets already had hits center mass so he went for the head. I guess all were on, save for two that grazed an ear. He's fast...

That makes sense. The misses he had up high, if he were to have aimed for the body, would have been within a 8-10" circle center mass.

The middle target he was shooting at, I could tell 2 shots were misses to the left of the head, but had he been aiming for the body, would have been in. On the right target, it appears he had one shot miss the head, but again would have been center mass if it was a body shot.

Up for a question for those with the experience.

I'm considering a "fast" build for competition use. I'm looking at Noveske's SS 18" barrel with the Intermediate gas system and the same barrel from MSTN with a rifle system.

Does anybody have any insight as to how much, if any, benefit can be gained from the extra 1.5" of gas system for somebody wanting smooth and fast?

Either way is going to be good, and the effect of your brake is going to cover any minor difference.
I had a Noveske 18" SPR in my 3-gun rifle and it was a great setup in all regards, if just a bit barrel heavy.
