Geez guys, let's not become the TOS here.
My LGS is one of, if not the biggest in the state. Those guys are all pretty laid back. They'll be willing to hand you a DPMS rifle just like they'll be willing to hand you one of their 10+ KAC rifles at any given time. They have wasted their breath on the normal folks, trying to convince of quality etc. They also can tell the n00bies from the pros that know fine firearms from the gang-stars asking to hold the Desert Eagle .50's and point them at their friends, and they treat them all the same, with respect. You never know when on of the gang-stars will plop down $1,600 in cash for that DE50.
They had a couple of rude, close-mided folks back in the day, but those got "sorted out."
Pretty good crew now, willing to help anybody, all day long. If you ask for honest advice, they'll give it. They will not typically bash a lesser brand unless they know the guy their talking to, which is smart. Because there's a ton of kids that they sell hundreds of DPMSs and Bushies too, where actually very few of the high-end buyers buy $3K KAC rifles.

We have gun shops around here like the one in the original post and we have ones that are laid back and straight up and tell it like it is. It seems the latter ones are also the ones that also stock the higher end rifles and will offer to order the one you want if they don't.
I tend to prefer the latter myself and I usually end up giving them my business. I would even if it ended up costing me a few bucks more. It never has however because usually either the other gun shops around don't have what I want (they stock only low end) or they beat the price the others are selling the good stuff at anyway. So why wouldn't I go there?

From my prespective we are trying to keep M4C from becoming like TOS, not pushing it in that direction. I had owned several BMs before I knew better. The members here helped me upgrade it's shortcomings and will still do so. Luckily those days are long gone for me. However we will not stand up and cheer when someone posts they just got a new DPMS, BM, Oly etc. But we will help you upgrade it if you ask and are willing to face it's shortcomings. Thus we are not like TOS.
I have to drive 1 1/2 hours to find a gun shop like you describe. Hopefuly some will learn how many customers they are loosing and will step up, maybe.
I agree totally about the lesser, inferior stuff. I had to learn the hard way too - well over a decade ago, however. Not so much with the AR15 (first AR was 20" Colt Heavy Match (during the ban)) but with other various weapon platforms. My first 308 AR was a DPMS (kinda the only 308 out there at the time) and boy was that a mistake.
If the price of a firearm is within $200 (not including FFL transfer fee) between online and a LGS, I'll go to the LGS.
This has never been the case though, so I'll go to the LGS to handle the weapon and then buy it online.

I'm sorry...hehe, what's TOS?
From Context, I am guessing "That Other Site"...
Definitely have to agree!
A few years ago I was new to the game and looking at ARs in LGS's. Mostly Bushmaster, DPMS and S&W. Liked the S&W but then the salesman gave me a wink and said "Here's what you really should get" then pulls out a Mini-14. I really think he was convinced it was the best choice! Anyway, that's about the time I realized I could do much better online.
Sad thing though, a buddy also was looking and got talked into a Carbon-15.![]()
