I currently work at a gunstore in PA. No matter how much i request it, we wont stock most of the higher end ARs because our distributer doesnt carry them. We do stock Colt, Stag, S&W, Whindam, Bushmaster, RRA, DPMS. I always insert subtle comments about my disdain for low end junk. I never recommend anything that we have aside from the Colts, Stags, and S&W. If someone buys something else from the shelf, its against my recommendations. Sometimes, i am able to convince them to special order high end rifles like Daniel Defense, BCM, etc.

One in which the LGS likely makes 60-100% profit off of the $2k RRA and maybe 10% profit off of the SR-15.

It's because their salesman (no offense to any printer salesman)
They usually just repeat what they hear in gun rags, brochures and "gasp" the interwebs.
It would be kinda silly for a salesman to talk up a product they dont even carry though.

Par for the course (sadly). I worked the sales counter in a shop for 7 years. Same thing. The problem is, most folks don't know jack shit about AR's. They believe and the propagate whatever rumors they've heard and/or what distributors tell them. It's also pretty difficult for a shop to make a living selling only top-end gear. Margins on guns are low enough without tying up all your capital in a few high end guns that sit, while the junk dealer across town turns 100 DPMS guns a month. The public doesn't know any better. They believe what the junk guy told them and when they come into your Colt/DD/BCM/LMT/KAC/Noveske shop, they think they're in a high-end brand name boutique.

I did finally get our shop owners to stock DD, LMT, KAC, Noveske, but they still believe RRA and DPMS are acceptable.

As for me, if I'm making an AR recommendation, it goes like this:

    "What's your budget?"
    Under $1K, Smith M&P
    $1K - $1200, Colt or BCM
    $1300-$1500, DD, Noveske, LMT
Best, money no object: Maybe KAC, but not for a first AR. I prefer to see folks have a gun with common parts first.

Yep, I read the whole thing. It doesn't matter what you, me, M4C or even the salesperson thinks is the best AR in the store, given the current inventory, its obvious what the owner thinks is the best, or makes them the most money.

Think outside of the M4C box for a second. There is a market for everything, no matter how inferior we think they are to the top tier brands.

My opinion is the days of retail store "salesmen" are over. Back in the day you relied on your local appliance store guy to "sell" you the goods. But today, if you go into any store...and ask anything other than do you take cash/credit/check...or can you order xxxx...then you deserve what you get. This is the computer age, no excuses for uneducated dipsihittery...if you don't know what's the best you ain't done enough homework.

Can blame the guy for pushing his product

This statement is absolutely ridiculous. A consumer does not deserve to get ****ed over, they deserve quality customer service. It is the responsibility of the FFL to inform the consumer on what he is buying.
You don't go to a car dealer and say "I want a muscle car", and get a recommendation for a Prius.

Most of the people in gun stores have no background in firearms and have no one close to them to inform them. If there is someone, they usually don't know shit...just like the LGS from the OP. This causes a lot of uninformed purchases due to the friend/family member's own bias. Again, it's my opinion that the LGS should be the one to dismiss the rumors and inform the consumer thusly. Now, we all know this isn't the case because doing right doesn't make as much money as doing what they say is right.

Shoulda gone all Jesus and the moneychangers on them!
    Yes!

That being said, I've been there too- I went to every single local gunshop around me when I was first looking and got the same replys. In fact I think the one guy I talked to pretty much summed it up- upon asking if they carried or could special order DD or BCM products, the he said, "We don't do anything with those brands because there's no market for them". I thought he'd had an aneurism at first, but he's right- as long as the general population is being bombarded with how wonderful every other POS- brand AR is, and as long as those brands keep being promoted as such by the "gurus" in the gun magazines we will never see the end of such things as the OP mentioned.

The thing I always wonder at, is where do you draw the line at butting in if something like the above situation happens? Do you go over to the customer and let 'em have it? Or wait til they're on the way out/ about to puchase? Or just leave them alone?
