Pellet Rifle for about 100 bucks

I thought this might be the place I could post this due to a pellet rifle having serval aadvantages in a bad situtaion. I want one now casue this peter rabbit is pushing his damn luck in my garden. Since I live in a Suburb i don't want to drop 22lr all over the place. I am still thinking about using squrrle traps and just removing them from the area.
So any body have any pellet rifles they that will do the job and not break the bank?

When I was younger my father had a .22 pellet gun that was no joke. You could hit things at about 50m with it and it'd still go through a 55gal drum at that range. I'll have to ask him what it was.

There are some serious airguns out there...I just dont know at the moment where to point to.

I would suggest just going to your local Bass Pro or other big sporting goods store and checking them out. They usually have a really nice selection ranging from $100 to $500 on the really high end.

From my younger pellet gun years, I remember using Gamo brand and killing plenty of birds and squirrels. That's really where I learned to shoot well!

As far as design, you are basically going to run into 3 or so different designs.
    1) CO2/Compressed Air design
    2) Pump design
    3) Break Action design.
I prefer the Break Action design since you don't have to pump it 10 times, and it is cheaper than the CO2 (generally).

I would like to say that you can find one for $100, but the newer designs out there are probably going to run a little more IIRC. Gamo makes a "compensated" version that is supposed to make it about 55% or so quieter, but that will be more in the $200 range. Depends on the brand and the features you want I guess...

ETA: One more thing, the common calibers for air rifle are .177 and .22. I prefer the .177 since you'll get more FPS out of it (I guess I've always been a faster/lighter kind of guy) and I've never had a problem dropping small game (within reason and with good shot placement) with .177...except for this black squirrel I remember shooting when I was younger...that thing was just absorbing pellets like a sponge! lol

i was under the impression that none of them would be loud or sound like a gun shot am I wrong on that. The only pellet rifle I ever had was an old dasiy.

Nah they're not loud at all...right about the same as a 22LR suppressed I would say. I'm not sure if the "compensated" version would be worth it since I've never shot it, but it is supposed to cut out some of the "sprong" noise that you get. I'll have to check out some of the reviews...

I guess I threw that option in there since (for me) a pellet gun would take the place of a 22LR + suppressor for small game hunting and I would want it as quiet as possible. Plus you did say that it could be used in a "bad situation"...which I agree.

I know you will have an edge with the 22LR in ballistics and range, but like I said, I've never had a problem taking down game...plus, anything past 50 yards and anything bigger than a small rabbit (IMO) I would just rather take with my .223 anyway.

Right now I just need to be able to hit that SOB out the back window. Before my garden turns to little nubs.

Ha yeah I understand man...heck, your old Daisy BB gun would probably do the trick if you still have it.

These are the quietest high velocity .177 pellet rifles out there (Independent Lab Testing Verified) and with the Model 20 I shoot extremely good groups up to 50yds. I prefer the 1200fps models but do not shoot the lite weight round nose pellets (8.64gr) but choose a heavier pointed pellet in the 14.5gr weight range for excellent penetration on all small garden raiding critters.

The suppressed models will keep your shooting discreet and the reasons I shoot the heavier pellets is that I'M pushing a heavier pellet at just under sub-sonic speeds 1000fps to 1050fps which is flat shooting at back yard ranges and will deck any size bunny from stem to stern.

I would not suggest any pellet gun that is listed under 1000fps to keep ranging factors to a minimum and as always these pellets will penetrate wooden fences, bush and other light back stops so one has to be extremely careful and know whats behind your target.

Also some jurisdictions ban the use of pellet rifles/pellet pistol so check your local laws before use.

I've seen this Beeman dual caliber for ~$120 at Wallymart: http://www.pyramydair.com/s/m/Beeman...ABB623F8.app01

I use a Crosman 1377 pistol for squirrel control in my yard. Will be trying it on the rabbits as soon as the sprouts get a bit bigger. It pushes 600fps from the factory and I picked mine up at Gander for $55 with free shipping.
I've replaced the bolt with a longer model to get the pellet skirt fully past the port where air comes in. I've also added a steel breech to hold a cheap little RDS and I did some work to the piston.

I don't own a chrony but I'm guessing it's close to 650 fps. I've been thinking about putting in a whole new piston and dropping a .22 barrel on it.
Right now using Gamo Rocket pellets (amazing hunting pellets. I've dropped three squirrels at ranges from 10-20 yds this spring) and doing some backyard ballistics it will penetrate both sides of a 1 gallon milk jug filled with water at 26ft.
The Gamo Magnum pellets aren't bad for hunting but I've noticed the skirts tend to be ragged so they're not too consistent.

So i got the ruger Air Hawk today(1000 fps), and must say I was disapointed accaucry was not good, and it was just as loud as 22lr was. I thought it would have been quieter than that. I returned it to the store and figured I was out the 177 pellets I bought. I might try another one maybe one that is closer to 500 fps. Hoping it will be quieter.
