Colt M-4's w/ three round burst and 14.5 inch barrel
Bushmaster fully auto
Back in the 80's my dept. authorized Colt Ar-15's and Springfield M1a's.
"The 1911 was the design given by God to us through John M. Browning that represents the epitome of what a killing tool needs to be. It was true in 1911 and is true now."—Colonel Robert J. Coates, USMC
There are essentially three types of policies for things like patrol carbines:
1. Agency issued only
2. BYOC from an approved list (bring your own carbine)
3. BYOC as long as you can qualify with it (no pre-approved list)
A lot of agencies issue Colts, and I've seen some that issue Bushmasters. In the BYOC departments without an approved list, you'll find a plethora of brands and configurations from the very good to the very bizarre.
The Colt 6920 is your best bet. It's the standard.I'd like my purchase to stand a good chance of being authorized.
My department issues Colts. In the past we have allowed a few others (1 Bushy and one lefty DPMS) but they both switched out to Colts later due to their personal guns experiencing problems.
Colt is the best bet at paradigm compliance.![]()
My employer issues Clots and allows others. I have seen a Bushmaster or three there and S&W or two. I presently field a Colt that is only Colt in that it is a Colt lower.
My agency allows any personally owned carbine or rifle for patrol( AR/Ruger mini-14), as long as it is .223/5.56 and factory triggers. They issue no patrol rifles at this time.

Thanks Dude- that agrees with the info I recall:
There WAS a program where the Federal government offered state and local law enforcement agencies surplus M16s previously issued to our military. All of these were originally full auto or 3 shot burst lowers.
Many departments opted to purchase updated uppers and many disabled the burst or full auto capabilities (nevertheless, these were restricted .gov ONLY guns even if the auto function was disabled).
Many departments opted not to participate. I believe the program has now ended.
Our program is a mix of provided and personal approved. The department issues Bushmaster, RRA, DPMS, and micro galils (usually reserved for SWAT).
No brands are specified but the patrol guys are limited to pistol calibers and .223. As long as it is reliable and they can qualify, they can carry it. We even will authorize a bolt action or lever action. SWAT are allowed .308 as well.
Modifications are allowed with approval as long as they don't affect the safeties. Optics are allowed. Slings and lights are mandatory.
Our policy was written to give the road guys the best chance to have a patrol rifle at their disposal.
oops, already answered.
