    POST SHTF transportation

Anybody given thought to post issue transportation issues. We have several bicycles and around 15 early 70's motorcycles we think are going to be key in getting around. Sadly most are vintage MX bikes and have very loud tuned exhaust on them but a few are trials bikes which are quiet and stealthy.

Also have our 79 landcruiser which is still a points system hopefully it's going to make it aswell.

Curious about how you guys see the issue of transportation.

    Although we do not currently have these modes of tranportation we have discussed the following, some of which you already touched on;

Older carb and points system 4x4 vehicle
    bicycle with small trailer
older, carb motorcycle with some type of luggage capability
    horses
and a good pair of boots

I think Motorcycles & ATV's (Yamaha 700 Raptors etc.) are wise.

Bicycles--quiet, faster than a horse, able to be ridden extensive distances in a single day, capable of hauling a small trailer, or used as a loadbearing device (as done in the Vietnam war....), fairly simple to maintain and service, lots of spare parts out there...etc.

Well if its an EMP we are dealing with any automobile made after about 1983 will more than likely go tango uniform.

I have always felt that automobiles would be bullet magnets during a period of civil unrest. They would be prime targets for car-jackings/ambushes for ANY and ALL who are looking to acquire just about anything. The mind set is that if you have a working vehicle and fuel to power it you must have some other goodies. Not to mention the average Joe is not going to have a particualr driving skill set such as light disipline for night driving and the like. Engine/muffler noise, exhaust fumes, and glare off windows and chrome parts are "shoot me signs" as well .

Right now I don't have any pre-onboard computer POVs. But on the list is a late 70's 4x4 (truck, Blazer, Bronco, Suburban, etc) with new diesel engine. A diesel KLR bike would be nice to have as well.

It's going to completely depend on which kind of feces hits the fan.

In the very unlikely event that an EMP event happens high enough in the atmosphere to damage/disrupt a large portion of the US, then the "old car" paradigm is true.

To deal with a more likely civil unrest or natural disaster scenario, then anything rugged and reliable is appropriate.

The three most important issues are going to be fuel availability, repairability, and ability to traverse off road.

4 x 4 is obviously a high priority. I think that diesel power would be best, based on the ability to run a wide variety of fuels, but that's not a deal-breaker.

IMHO a small to medium sized diesel 4 x 4 is probably the best answer. Something like a Toyota 4Runner/Hilux Surf or Tacoma/Hilux (ideally in diesel, but tough to find in the US), or older Land Cruiser, Montero, etc.

I have a 1973 CJ5 and a 1986 Ford F150 4x4 I'm redoing to deal with such circumstances, both are manual trans and both are straight 6 cylinders.
I definitely need my polaris ranger. These are just to get out and around, not to leave. I'm not planning on going anywhere, I will make my stand here on my own place out in the country. I have 5 road ready 4 wheel drive vehicles here. Far as I know the only one with points is the CJ5.

Motorcycles would be my bet as well. You can still build or have built motorcycles with old school kick starters.

    Alright...

What is the definition of the term "SHTF" here? Are we talking about a long-term grid-down event? Are we talking about riots, food shortages, what...?

As far as I am concerned, the whole focus on "bug out vehicles" is simply an excuse for some guys to have a bunch of vehicles...

I don't really buy into the whole "prepping" movement anyway, but if I did, I still can't understand the idea of having a "bug out vehicle." What are you going to do when you get a flat? Remember, we've been hit with an EMP so unless you have a hand pump for that tire... What about fuel? Diesel doesn't last well at all, and neither does gasoline....

I guess what I'm trying to say is this: Don't waste money on a vehicle that isn't going to be of practical value to you now, in some effort to be "prepared" for the "end of the world" or whatever.

Personally, assuming that there is a long-term grid-down event, I think that horses will be more useful than many vehicles - I can go places with a horse that you aren't going to be able to go in most vehicles, not to mention the fact that I don't need to change the oil or put air in the tires with a horse...

If you're not into prepping and since you don't seem to understand how easy it is to store fuel and it is damn easy to make fuel that will run a diesel engine I suggest you start reading.

For you to use horses you have to feed & shelter them or else they become food. If you've got the land to do so you will be gtg. Can't forget distance and mileage limits with equines or they'll be tits up in no time.

Right now I've got an AWD sedan and a cargo box that will get me to wherever I need to go provided an EMP hasn't been detonated.
I have several bicycles and a trailer and panniers for short term/distance use.

My dream vehicle is a 1st Gen 4runner/hilux converted to diesel and running a Dana solid axle.
