Please recommend an optic for the casual shooter

I'll start off by saying that I am a recreational shooter and only plink at the indoor range near my house. Their rifle range has a maximum distance of 50 yards. So far I've been using the irons but I think it's time for an optic. Again, my life will not have to depend on it but I would like a quality optic that will last and hold zero well.

I've used a red dot from a buddy's AR and liked it (Primary Arms), I know they are a clone of the Aimpoint but in my case, would it be worth spending the extra money on one?

My budget is about $300 but the less I spend on an optic the more I'll have for ammo.

    Thanks all.

I would wait and save an extra $100 and get a Aimpoint Pro. This way you will have optic that runs 100% and will have a great resale value if you chose to sell it. If you don't have the money for a good optic you can't afford a cheap optic either. Buy once and cry once.

If it is a real one, I would go with that, or as stated above the Aimpoint Patrol Rifle Optic (PRO).

Thanks, that one is real close to me too.

So the clones also say "Aimpoint" on them? How would I spot a fake?

That's an 'ok' deal - I got mine used WITH the QRP mount, flashkill, rubber armor & covers, for $250 delivered a few years ago. Unless you're in a hurry for a class/competition, you might continue to shop around the EE here and on other sites.

There are several documented ways to spot fakes, just have to do a google search.

I know it may not always be possible but try to buy from a reputable seller.

Are there any opportunities in your area for getting out and running your AR away from the bench at an indoor range? Red dots are nice but if you are limited to more or less standing or sitting to shoot at an indoor range you may not get to realize the benefits of the red dot over your irons.....meaning the money may be better spent picking up a case of ammo.

That is a very good point wahoo, and one I hadn't thought of myself. I do not shoot competitively and the only other reason I would need to get up and go would be in a SHFT situation. Other than that, I'm limited to range use only, thanks for the insight.
