Guys... I get that I messed up. I said in the OP that I got impatient. Can someone please address the actual question... did I ruin the lower?

I am going to hit it with some Aluma Hyde. I just removed the Bolt Catch and sprayed the area with degreaser. Once it dries, I'll hit it with a coat of Aluma Hyde and then reinstall the bolt catch tomorrow.

The word "ruin" means different things to different folks. If the gun funcitons (which you don't know yet) then it is ok.

Let me define it then. Did I weaken the lower receiver and make it more likely to have a catastrophic failure? Assuming that the bolt catch functions, is it ok to continue the build and trust the rifle?

forged lower receivers don't really have catastrophic failures often, you could shave a few thousandths and be fine is my guess. I wouldn't sweat it.

There is a lot material there so you should be fine.

Personally I would not use a RRA LPK for a defensive weapon, but that is another discussion...

You're probably ok. Un-install the bolt catch and hit any shiny spots with alumahide if it bothers you.

Still, dremeling on a new lower isn't something I'd do. Are you sure it wasn't the bolt catch itself and not the lower?
You forgot the "as long as it's in spec" part.

In this neck of the woods, when it comes to lowers, using what's cheapest is pretty good advice as RRA, BM & Oly receivers cost more than LRB, Aero Precision or PSA.

Frogger, the cuts to the lower will not weaken it enough to be a concern. Removal of the anodizing does compromise it's protection from corrosion some and the depth of the hardened surface reduced.

Aluminum is a self healing metal. When exposed to oxygen it forms a layer of aluminum oxide which is hard and seals the rest of the material underneath against corrosion. Anodizing simply makes that layer thicker and more durable through an electro chemical process. Alodine does the same thing but it's a chemical only process. I don't know if Alumahyde does the same or if it simply colors the bare aluminum.

The only real complication here is if the bolt catch is now out of alignment enough to affect function. Insert an empty mag into the well and see if it engages the bolt release correctly. Since you only had to remove a little material, chances are everything is fine

Because the parts are suboptimal and why risk bad parts on a weapon which your life or loved ones may depend upon. If you prefer cheap then best never use a weapon in a defensive mode and just use your limited vocabulary to scare off the bad people.
