    Sling Advice Needed

I currently have one point sling. It tends to hang down at my side. I want it to hang across my chest. I have Knight's RAS and a Tapco T6 stock. I'm thinking about getting a Magpul stock and a quick disconnect adapter to mount on the RAS and getting a sling from Larue. Then my sling will attach to the stock and the rails with quick disconnect swivels. I'm left handed. Does this sound like a good plan? I was wondering what you guys use on rifles similar to mine, and pictures might help. Thanks.

I am going to assume that the rifle is hanging at your side because you are putting your firing arm (left) and head through the sling. This will tend to make the rifle drop to the side of the body.

Try putting the support arm (right in your case) and head though the sling. This will let the gun fall to your front and support side.

The single point should be attached between the stock and receiver, either on a dedicated plate or clamp on on the receiver extension (buffer tube).

If you are already doing this, I apologise for the Barney Style, no offence meant. I just see a lot of people using the sling incorrectly simply because they haven't been informed of the correct method.

You are right. If I put my other arm through it hangs down on the front side, but it points straight down and it's not as high as I'd like it. In Iraq, I had an M16 with a Spec-Ops Mamba sling. It was up higher and not pointing straight down, but I didn't like all the straps. I guess I'm looking for a set up that keeps the rifle up where I want it to be and not pointing straight down(like the Mamba), but without all the straps.

The purpose of a single point sling to to allow transitions from the primary firing side to the alternate side (left to right) and keep the gun attached to the body during transitions to a sidearm. It is not a patrol sling, and that is one of the faults of a single point.

However, it is a generally preferred attribute of any tactical sling that the rifle rests vertically when not under control by the user. This is important in a tactical setting as the gun will not be flagging a team member or pose as an impediment to movement by either the user or anyone moving past the user in restrictive areas.

The distance the butt sits from your shoulder is determined by the sling loop size, attachment length, and attachment point on the carbine. The loop should be large enough to put on and take off and allow transition to the opposite shoulder, and no more. This may be the only length you can adjust, as most single points have a fixed length attachment system.

If you like what the Mamba does, I would recommend using a Mamba. However, as far as real tactical slings go, the Mamba is far behind the power-curve. But, if it does what you want it to do, then it satisfies your requirements.

If you want a better solution I recommend a BFG VCAS, as two point slings really are better than any other option for 14.5 and up carbines, and will offer a greater amount of adjustement.

Blue Force Gear Vickers VCAS two point sling on KAC rail QR sling mount on KAC M4 RAS rail and KAC heavy duty push button QR sling swivels on my M4 type carbine with Magpul CTR stock

I agree the BFG Vickers VCAS two point sling are great for carbines and could quickly be adjusted, I prefer it on my lighter weight carbine.

LaRue-Viking Tactics sling with padding which I like better on my heavy weight carbine mounted on Daniel Defense rail QR mount and Vltor EMOD buttstock

I like the LaRue padded two point sling for my heavier carbine but I'm waiting for the BFG Vickers padded sling to be released because I prefer the thicker webbing material of Blue Force Gear.

AR-15A3, thanks for the pics. The top picture looks like what my rifle will look like when it's done. It's my first build. Right I have a DPMS lower with a BM LPK, LMT upper, RAS rails, Tapco stock. I still need to get an LMT BCG and charging handle. I'm going to change the stock to Magpul and get a two point sling that will attach to the rail and the stock, and eventually an EO tech.

The BFG Vickers IMHO is the best two point sling on the market. We even have our own version of it with dual swivels sewn into the sling. This cuts down on cost and weight.

Sure, that's an older picture of my LMT carbine setup, currently I removed the Fastex buckle from my BFG Vickers sling, also I'm using black TangoDown rail panels like on my tan carbine and I'm still waiting for shipment of my new latest Troy BUIS which I'll replace my old KAC 300m BUIS.

My Vickers front sling is mounted on the rear end of the rail and it's setup to be muzzle down on my left side (I'm right handed) when I transition to my sidearm.

You could mount the front of the sling at the front of the rail if you want it to be more horizontal, I would also recommend the Daniel Defense rail QR sling mount adapter because it doesn't completely rotate and it doesn't make the sling twisted, that's one of my next planned upgrade.

I would also recommend the LMT M16 BCG, BCM (Bravo Company) extra strength bolt extractor spring upgrade kit and LMT or any other good brand H (heavy) buffer.

All those parts and accessories are available from Grant of G&R Tactical, he's a great guy to deal with.

Good luck on your build project.

For a really versitle single point sling it's really hard to beat a GEAR give them a look. I have several after reading so many positive reviews from guys using them over in the box. http://www.gearsector.com/
