We used to have to wear our duty belts exactly the same way, including keeper placement. We even had to have the same pens in our pockets. Oh and I was not allowed to carry a second set of cuffs! That drove me freaking crazy. We had a lefty that was made to shoot right handed! Talk about ****ing crazy!!!!!!

Good point. Don't all NYPD cops have to buy their own duty pistol from an approved list? I think it used to be Glock, Sig and Smith..

Houston PD allows personally owned AR's, in fact all of the officers weapons are personally owned. Can be any AR in .223 with at least a 16 inch barrel or a Ruger Mini-14. No restrictions on modifications as far as I know. Have to take a 3 day class and qualify in order to carry one on duty. Have to to take a seperate two day class to run optics (only aimpoint or eotech). Must qualify annually to keep it. These are just what I remember off the top of my head.

No issues so far in terms of liability.

My agency allows personal rifles. That must be approved by the head firearms instructor ( never heard of Noveske , BCM, or KAC)

Also the chief must "look" at a complete rifle before final approval.

Bushmaster, Stag, and Olympic are on the approved list along with LWRC, Colt, Spikes, and one or two others.

I got Noveske to the approved list and I am working on KAC.

The dept. will issue a pre 1965 Colt surplus rifle if the officer doesn't want to purchase their own.

The Colts came full auto, and then were neutered.

I'll add to the insanity. We can't use holsters built to carry our P220's with the light mounted because its not uniform. We can't use extended mags because it's not uniform so we're stuck with 8+1. A whole 25 rounds between the weapon and belt.

We can use any "reputable" brand as determined by our range officers. Lets us have a bit more flexibility.

I honestly thought we were in the stone age since we were just able to be trusted to decide long/short sleeves about 6 years ago. Up till then it was some arbitrary date on the calender no matter how hot or how cold it was.

Below is my agency's list of authorized rifles. Some of you will like it and some won't, but it has worked for us. It has been this way, with minor changes, for a little over 22 years. Initially we were only allowed .223/5.56 rifles/carbines. The .308s were permitted about 10 years later. The armorer must inspect and approve your rifle before you are allowed to qualify/carry it.

    Rifles/Carbines

    Caliber-.223: HECKLER & KOCH 93, RUGER Mini-14, VARIOUS MFGs AR – 15

Caliber-.308: VARIOUS MFGs AR – 10 types, M-14 types, HK types

    RDS must co-witness with BUS.

You must attend a Department approved F/A class to carry a department issued M-16. Most patrol cars have M-16s in them now. Many are using their own upper on the Department's M-16 lower.

ETA: RDS must be Eotech, Aimpoint, Trijicon or Meprolite

Want to hear crazy? Our dept. has NO rifles or shottys. We have M&P40's, which aren't even issued to us. When we go home they stay at the dept for the next shift to use. No personal weapons and all holsters have to be the exact same due to "liability". To be fair we are a small dept inside a major city. We have had only one person deploy his firearm in the 2 years I have been here. If we need serious backup we call the city or county. It's messed up, but we rarely see anything major, but it will happen one day. It's quite boring here, and although the pay isn't bad for my area I want to get out of here. Anyone hiring?

Does that mean pointed or shot at someone? If it's the former, dang!

Harris County Sheriff's Office (Houston Area) also allows personal weapons, but most be from the list of approved weapons. You must first complete a three day course, qualify, and have your Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain, and Major sign off on it before you are allowed to carry it.

Some of those on the list:

Colt, Bushmaster, RRA, Olympic, High Standard, DPMS, S&W, and Ruger I believe.

Weapons are inspected by your Lieutenant and qualifications every 6 months.

Olympic did a lot of work to get in with Law Enforcement in the early 90s. looks like that work is still paying off. hopefully no one is actually rolling with one. Particularly if Colt is on the list.

Good work on getting Noveske on the list
