Our dept allows personally owned ARs. They take it one step further, and will even buy a Colt LE6920 for you if you don't have a rifle, and then deduct the cost across your 26 biweekly checks for the following year. They call this the buy-back program, and it has gotten many more long guns on the streets.

Two years ago, they expanded the rifle buy-back funds to offer the following optics choices with the same deduction offer:

    Aimpoint PRO
    Eotech (forgot which)
    Leupold CQT
    ACOG (TA44 I think...)

We are also allowed to carry personally owned optics of our choosing as long as they are less than 3x mag'd. This deals with optics > 3x being considered precision weapons per TCLEOSE.

The GOs state that personally owned rifles must be of same specs as the dept issued/owned guns (Older LE6920s), but I got an LMT MRP Piston approved, and two of my buddies got SCAR 16s through. It is up to the head armorer in Training/Recruiting, but he has been good about approving quality weapons.

I'm currently shopping for a lightweight mid length platform for less weight to replace the LMT, considering the DDM4v7, and I don't expect any issues getting it approved.

We carry Stag Arms 16 inch AR's in most of our patrol cars. We soon will have them in all of our marked cars. At this time no optics or lights on them.

Policy allows personal owned approved AR or Ruger Mini 14. Policy states any reputable manufacture and approved by the rifle instructor or chief. Personal weapons must be loaded with the approved department ammo purchased at the officer's own expense.

I'll copy pasta a PM I sent earlier in the week...

Here's our policy in a nut shell:

-A standard direct impingement AR-15 type rifle chambered in .223/5.56
-There is no barrel length in writing, but the powers that be say no SBRs (YMMV).
-Rifle to be purchased and maintained by the Deputy/Officer on their own time and dime.
-Rifle should be of a reputable brand and approved by the Firearms Training Unit Supervisor (I.E. Colt, RRA, Bushmaster, KAC, LMT, DD, BCM, S&W, Noveske, La Rue, Stag, Next Generation, etc.)
-The rifle shall have iron sights affixed and readily deployable.
-Various optics of quality brands are allowed with FTU Supervisor approval.
-The rifle shall have a quality 1, 2, or 3 point sling.
-A weapon grade light is allowed with FTU Spv. approval
    -No aftermarket painting or camo.
    -No noise suppression devices
-The rifle's trigger system shall not be modified from its factory condition, be it one or two stage.
-Rifle ammunition shall be of a reputable manufacturer as issued by the FTU, or used with FTU Supv. approval.
-Aftermarket modifications to rifles including but not limited to pistol grips, vertical grips, handguards, stocks, bipods, sights, optics, ,lasers devices, slings, mounts, internal parts, etc., shall not be made to the rifle without approval from the FTU Supv. as indicated on the department's Firearms Modification Form.
-The rifle shall be kept secured in a protective case in the patrol vehicle's trunk unless the vehicle is equipped with a rifle rack.
-Deployment policy is same as shotgun, as some prefer that as their long gun.
-To carry a rifle, the Deputy/Officer must have particiapted in and passed the department's two day Patrol Rifle Class, and must maintain their certification by attending each of two rifle training classes per year (Spring/Fall) where they must qualify.

As you can tell, our FTU Supv. has direct control over what guys carry and the modifications they make. Although it sounds possibly restrictive, it's a good thing as he's progressive in his oulook on employment, training, and modifications. USMC background and attends VTAC, CSAT, and CTT-S classes.

He's thankfully allowed me to use a perm'd 14.5", Redi-mod, and BAD lever.

ETA: We're the second largest S.O. in Oregon with about 250 sworn between patrol, corrections, and civil.

Good point. Don't all NYPD cops have to buy their own duty pistol from an approved list? I think it used to be Glock, Sig and Smith..
You almost hit the spot!. I'll give you a hand, When NYPD started with the 9mm (the revolver era) the officers had to pay for their guns. Nowadays it is issue to you (free) as long as you are dont get fired or retire before 5 years (I think) and as far for the options you are absolutely correct, you have the option to choose from:
    -Glock 19
    -S&W 5946
    -Sig 226.

As for off duty you have options from:
    -Glock 2
    -Sig 239
    -And 2 S&W either 3914 or 3953 Tactical.

But also note that soon NYPD is going to be moving from the Duty 5946 and Off duty's to the M&P, They are already on test mode (but haven't been approved because of all the NYPD restrictions and testing procedures) and the reason why is because S&W is not making them anymore.

    Hope this helps

And BTW, No rifles or Shotty's. They had it in the 80's, only Highways have Shottys and ESU has the big toys and certain Organized Crime officers are trained in the Mini 14, M4 and MP5. New recruits gets a small training on the 3 I just said but only for safeguarding purposes.

My agency(New Windsor NY) allows personally owned carbines. We have a choice of Bush, Colt, S&W, or Del-Ton. Optics can be Aimpoint or Eotech. We have an armory with Bush or Colt AR's if you choose not to buy your own. We have to use dept issue shotgun(Rem & Moss) and pistol (Glock 22&23, det's model 27). We get $1k/yr uniform allowance and were allowed to purchase the rifle with that $. I bought a Colt LE6920 and got it for $816( we bought 17 Colt's). I added the Aimpoint PRO and some other goodies. Mine is stored in the trunk due to my K9 in the back seat. Nice to have a rifle I don't have to share.

You are correct but so far no one has spent the coin to purchase any of the three you have listed. Most have either RRA or colt. There is one Wilson running around too. There is a cavot at the bottom that allows the head armoror to make exceptions.

Tulsa Co. Sheriff's Office allows personally owned AR's. Must meet certain criteria. I use my BCM 14.5" LW Middy with Aimpoint H1.
