M&P "CCO"?

I know that this is not a new idea but I've been playing around with the idea of mating a 9mm M&P compact frame with a FS slide assembly to make kind of the equivilent of a 1911 CCO with my M&P. I prefer the compact grip for ccw and the longer slide for a longer sighting radius. Obviously this is not a gun we will be seeing S&W producing any time soon.

After playing around I've found the combination balances fairly well even with the longer slide. I've heard that this setup functions fine but I plan on function testing the combination in the near furture to test for reliability. The obvious issue is the short dust cover of the compact frame. This needs to be addressed. Has anyone or does anyone make a dust cover extension to make this combination work? I've got several ideas in my head but wanted to see if anyone else has tried this. Any other pitfalls to consider?

I'd seen/heard of the full-sized grip reduction, but putting a FS slide onto a compact frame is a new concept for me.

Well, cutting down the frame makes much more sense then trying to fit a dust cover, but I did not think that it was feasible due to the way the backstrap attaches. Apparently, in the picture of the Bowie Tactical M&P with the cut frame they do away with the backstrap takedown pin and must permanently attach the backstrap. I may have to contact them to find out more about this. Thanks for the link.

You can do what I did here. I sent my gun to Dan Burwell, of Burwell Gunsmithing. What he did was chop about .6 inches off the bottom of the grip, along with the mags. The gun is now the size of a Glock 19, which in my opinion is the optimal size for a handgun. Of course, this can also be done to any other full size or longslide M&P. Took a while, and be aware he is somewhat slow to respond, but this is due to him having an extremely busy schedule. I believe it was $150 or something like that for one mag and the chop, The backstrap is still removable, along with the grip tool. Check out this to get some hi-res photos of this kind of work.

I've been toying around with that idea as well. I'm wondering if CTC's are compatable with the chop?

No sorry I do not. But the dimensions, at least.according to my ruler, are exactly the same. The only downside to this chop is that the mags have to be cut as well. But the grip length is ideal for duty and concealed use.
