    Something interesting....

There was a thread on another forum where a guy was trying to build a RRA AR by buying the upper and lower separately. So he went through the catalog and added everything up. To his surprise, it was more expensive to do it this way than to buy a complete weapon.

This peaked my interest and I pulled out my RRA dealer sheet and started to crunch some numbers. I wanted to see if it was cheaper to buy RRA upper and lower seperate (saving you the 11% FET). When I added everything up, it wasn't! So I ran the numbers and that it appears that RRA builds in the FET (+ some) when you buy the components seperate. So it is much cheaper (in RRA's case) to buy a complete weapon VS the parts way (FYI).

Now I started to crunch some numbers with Stag Arms and see if the same was true. It wasn't. You save the 11% (and then some) when you buy a Stag upper and lower seperate.

It is very interesting to see how different manufacturers do things.

Yeah, I really like how they started doing their M4 feedramps differently than they should have too!

They're not M4 feed ramps, and they work just fine!!!

    We'll according to them anyway!

I guess some companies can justify anything, if they try hard enough.

Based on my experience I'd rather pay more for the RRA parts than worry about hit or miss quality of Stag. I've bought and sold all manner of RRA parts as well as whole rifles and seen very few problems (had a miss-shipped part once). On the other hand, every Stag rifle, upper, or lower (several of each) has had a problem such as upper receiver rail out of spec, front sight base canted, barrel nut put on without anti-seize or even lube, lower receiver with broken disco, etc.

RRA gets a lot of parts from CMT (Stag). I see little difference personally. Stag also does not build in the 11% FET like RRA does.

I just wanted to see if I got this straight. When you buy a complete lower from RRA they charge you the 11% FET on the entire gun, instead of 11% on the complete lower? If that is true that is completely dishonest. You better believe that they don't pay all of that to Uncle Sugar.

Kind of. From looking at my dealer price sheet, it looks like they have added some kind of extra fee to the cost of their uppers and lowers VS buying the weapon complete. It cannot be FET (as they charged to much for it to be just 11%).

It might just be their way to get consumers to buy complete weapons and discourage consumers from buying parts from them.

As an 07 FFL (manufacturer), you have two masters. The ATF and the Treasury Dept. The ATF wants to know if you "roll mark" your own weapons (basically make a registered weapon under your companies name). The Treasury wants to know if you are making more than 50 guns a year without paying FET.

Now what has my interest is that the Treasury Dept. basically says that if a consumer (in the span of 1 year) buys enough components to build a weapon, then that counts against one of your 50 that you are allowed to build without collecting FET. If you go over 50 weapons, then you have to pay the 11% on ALL 50!
Now IMHO, it is NEARLY impossible to keep track of what all components a customer buys and seeing if it adds up to a complete weapon. So I am thinking that RRA just said screw it and decided to build the FET into their uppers and lowers. Don't know for sure if that is true, but one thing is for certain, it is much cheaper to buy a complete RRA from the factory VS going the parts way.

    I called

I called a week ago to try and just buy a barrel, And was told they dont do that any more. This is just after a mouth or two I order a SS barrel for a build I did. I hope this is not a truning in to trend.
