    Preppers, fill this up,

I'm not really into prepping. Figure I would just gather what I already have and take the rest of what I need id SHTF. I already have a Pelican 1630 (27.70" X 20.98" X 15.50" ) and figured I would start filling it with essentials. I am thinking rations, purifiers, couple bottles of Vodka...???
I am military, trained, I have weapons. I already have a footlocker with all of our camping gear (two tents, cook stove/ fuel, tarps, 550, maps of the SW, etc).
With the 1630 I am thinking of something like a mini supply warehouse; ammo, doubles of maintenance items, things that wear out, rat ****ed MRE's., seeds, a set of upsized clothing for the children as they grow??? ( I have two babies)
So, assuming that you had an E&E'esque case with camping/cooking gear and bug out bags with 1st use items, what would you throw in the 1630 so that you could toss it in the SUV and boogie?
I could not stay put and would have to travel if situation was bad. Safe haven is 1 tank of gas away and a safer haven is 3 away. I am looking at a large bladder to store fuel in as well.

So what are you looking for? A 72 hour kit in the pelican case? If that is the case, no pun intended, then that should be easy.

Depends on the ages of your babies--are they housebroken yet? If not, that lil' Pelican box won't hold much in the way of diapers...

    Valid point.

I would focus on long tern storage food, water purification items, and basic small items.

From a prior post in the Prep on a budget thread.

Here is a Sterilite Footlocker that works out for storing SHTF items or just about any light to mid-weight items that needs to be mobile. I have subjected them too heavy use and they are very sturdy in construction. In store price is $16.00 and the current colors I have seen are Orange, Dark green, Dark gray and Blue.

    Spec's,
Sterilite's 1842 Footlocker offers a 92-quart capacity that can accommodate larger items, and includes wheels for easy portability.

    •Heavy-duty plastic
    •Accommodates standard padlock (not included)
    •Item dimensions: 31.128"L x 17.5"W x 13.875"H
    •Shipping dimensions: 31.5"L x 17.75"W x 28.25"H
    •Shipping weight: 10 lbs.

I feel that the Pelicans have a low internal capacity/total volume ratio.
No need to mention that they are heavy themselves....
So, I only consider them for storage/transport of delicate or water sensitive stuff.
For general storage/transport I feel that sturdy plastic boxes fit the bill in a more cost and weigh effective manner.

I have to completely disagree with you on this. I use nothing but large Pelican cases. Why? Because they are very good at what they do. They keep everything out, to include water. I have been using them in every third world shit hole I have been in in the last 10 years to carry my medical supplies for my team. They have never let me down and they can take a beating.

If you use a small Wal-Mart foot locker or such, it will fall apart the first time you start testing it. That is if the contents have not been destroyed already.

Bottom line: You get what you pay for.

Is it for "bugging in" or "bugging out"?

Someone just discovered Pelican cases =)

They're very nice, and sturdy, but heavy and expensive too.

Hmm. That may be the difference. I only have small cases.
Probably there is a threshold where the internal/overal volume rataio gets better.
Certainly this is not the case for models 1510 and 1400 that I own.
