    Short barrel .40 ammo recommendations?

I purchased a Walther PPS .40 with a 3.2" barrel. Nice and flat for IWB carry around here in the summer months when I wear a lot of Hanes-type, loose fitting cotton shorts. Hell, nice for IWB carry any time of year for that matter!

I know Doc says anything below 3.5" of barrel is uncharted water, but what would be good for this weapon?

FWIW I chrono'd a few loads out of it and here's what I got:

    Federal 155gr HST......1114fps average

    Cor Bon 165gr JHP.....1076fps average

    Winchester Ranger-T 180gr......968fps average

I have other ammo and can obviously buy something else, just thought I'd throw those known numbers out as a reference point.

Just use one of the recommended loads and you will be fine.

    Thanks.

Looks like the 180gr Ranger-T is on the list, and from my chrono results it didn't suffer as big a velocity drop with the short barrel as the others did (which is to be expected I guess).

Ive seen in person how Speer Gold Dot performs next to Hornady Critical Duty, Federal HST, and Remington Golden Saber (an ATK presentation). Though all performed well, Speer performed better.

I cant comment on how they would perform in such a small platform, but in a average barrel length, IMO, Speer is the way to go.

The Speer 180gr GDHP performed well in Glocks 22, 23, and 27 in ballistic testing, human tissue, and animal tissue events that I have personally been a part of.

The great part of all this is the number of good choices out there. If you don't like, want, or can't get a certain bullet or loading of it, there are others that will help you get home if you do your part. Buy them, and hit the range to build the skills required to use them effectively.
