300 AAC Questions

What velocity are these rounds expanding down to? I understand the advantage offered as compared to 5.56 on barriers, but what about general use for things like deer or hog hunting? Are there advantages, or are these projectiles acting like FMJ at 100 yards? Exactly how much more lethality are you purchasing for the price of that ammo, when comparing a 5.56 SBR to a 300AAC SBR?

Sounds like about 150 yards or so from an 8-9" barrel.

Does it do damage like a pistol, or damage like a rifle, though? I recall DocGKR stating somewhere that 19-2000fps or so was the threshold for something to behave like a "rifle round" in most cases...ie wounding through TSC as well as permanent cavity disruption.

Black Tip Barnes expands at 300yds. I'd prefer my 300blk over ny 5.56 in SBR form.

All this talk of the 300AAC has tempted me to buy an SBR upper and a 7.62K and give it a go, but I don't want to spend the $$ if it's not noticeably more effective on deer/hogs, etc. because the sound levels are about the same suppressed, as I understand.

I like it cause it slings bullets twice the size of my 5.56 without penalizing me with so much velocity loss from a short barrel like 5.56. As a defensive or hunting tool I prefer the supersonics loads silenced and non silenced. The subsonic stiff is nice too and has its purposes but the supersonic ammo is what I prefer.

The 110gr and 125gr loads are plenty effective on hogs and deer. Just keep in mind that just like 7.62x39 or 30-30 the 300blk is not meant to be used as a 500yd hunting rifle.....there are better options for that role.

There is a lot of variability with 300BLK depending on the ammunition and range. Personally I think it is optimal within 200m, and only viable to 300.

The stand out bullet is the Barnes 300BLK black tip 110gr copper bullet. It does around 2300fps out of a 16", and expands correctly down to 1300fps if I recall correctly and is barrier blind. My understanding is Barnes tuned this bullet for the 300BLK.

The Remington 125gr Accutip has good performance, but without the barrier penetration of the Barnes. I think this is also a 300BLK optimized round, although I don't recall seeing any info about its velocity performance window.

There are a number of .308 projectiles that have not been tuned for the 300BLK that provide reasonable performance sold as 125gr brown, green, pink tips.

My understanding is you don't lose a lot of performance when going to a SBR (supersonic). IIRC the Barnes is still about 2000fps out of a SBR and well within its performance envelope.

That said, things change a lot when you go subsonic. The heavy 200gr rounds are needed to cycle reliably, and that lowers velocity to around 1000fps. I don't think there are any .308 projectiles optimized for expansion at that speed, so these are probably best compared to big pistol FMJ.

That said, the upside is you can switch back and forth with only a mag change getting good supersonic performance out of your SBR, and quiet performance with subsonics.

Personally I plan to only use supersonics and the Barnes for defense, keeping the effective range in mind.

I'm probably going to wait until AAC comes out with their SR-7 before I go with a 300 BLK. Definitely some merit there.
