Maybe I am OCD, but I always shoot some compressed air (from a can) or gun-scrubber down the gas-tube as the last step of my cleaning process. The reason is to get any and all CLP and Foaming Bore Cleaner OUT of that tube that may have gotten in there when I was cleaning the bore.

Lubing the gas-key internaly with 1-2 drops of CLP is straight from TM and can be found in any military manual's cleaning section for the AR platform. The rest of that list looked like a load of crap also. I will say though, that CLP in my rust prevention tests did better than even grease.

Though one drop of CLP down the gas-key is part of the TM, that and many other things in the TM are now known to be useless or counter-productive.
Standing CLP in the gas key is corrosion preventative, but is unnecessary.

Just a little FYI. I am a contractor in Iraq and we don't use those. I have have worked for 3 very large PMC's over here. We curently have Junkmasters auto
M4geries (Bean Counter decision) the other issued Colt M4's (courtesy of the State Dept.) and the other issued M16A2's, Colt M4's and Junkmaster auto
M4geries. Many other companies here are using AK's, various M4's/ 16's and one very large Brit company is partially issuing Yugo M21's in 5,45. So these guys are full of shit!

How many military people here remember cleaning gas tubes with pipe cleaners in basic and at their unit? It's a complete waste of time. The carbon in the tube gets extremely hot and literally bakes on inside. Pipe cleaners and other shit is not going to get it out. My rule of thumb is when I change a barrel I replace the gas tube as well. Since no one keeps track of rounds fired I am pushing to replace gas tubes at least (1) per year. I also encourage personnel to check their gas rings every time they do maintenance. believe it or not many do not even know how to test them. I also have to constantly dispell the myth about stagerring the gaps in the gas rings. Many look at me like I just killed their favorite dog.

My basic rule for the gas tube is a follows.

Don't f**k with the gas tube.

    Simple as that.

The only "failures" I've seen with gas tubes involved full auto fire for extended periods of time. Split the sucker right down the side.
The barrel was glowing red. This was an intentional "test to destruction".

The other failures that I've seen and the most common are related to alignment.
If the tube is not properly aligned the combination of heat and flex can cause impact between the key and tube. In return you end up with a folded tube.

This is usually seen on home builds by inexperienced builders but I've also seen it with factory builds. Usually caused by improperly torqued barrel nuts.

In most cases the mis-alignment can be overcome without touching the barrel nut. Just a little tweaking to the tube with solve the problem. Some cases are extreme though and resetting the barrel nut is the better option.

    As for cleaning the tube............

Don't f**k with it. If you think the tube is getting plugged... swap it. Their cheap enough and it's easy to change.

I've NEVER had a plugged tube.

    YMMV.
Hope/Pray for the best, be prepared for the worst... but when the ball drops... go barbarian.

Me thinks you witnessed some guy's that know nothing, nada, about AR15 cleaning and maintenence.

Did you notice them having any failures ??? My guess is that they've had failures and haven't a clue how to address them professionaly. Just a guess.

The only failures I've seen with gas tubes are self induced with with torqueing the foregrip too hard when busting in doors and thus rotating the rail and barrel nut and pinching off the tube. That's why LaRue has a "keeper" system on the rear of their rails.

This is the kinda stuff that makes my hair stand on end.

I currently work in a hospital drawing blood in the blood lab. I guess that makes me capable of inflating a collapsed lung, cracking a chest open, and administering anesthesia during surgery huh ?

If there's one I hate in the gun industry, it's the guy behind the counter that owns one pistol, maybe a mini 14 and attempts to give me advice on how to place surgical shots with an M4 in a semi permissive envirenment in a combat theater .
