    And what about prisoners?

I wonder what the jailers and prison guards will do with prisoners if SHTF. Certainly the most dangerous and violent beings that our society produces cannot be released like a pack of angry wolves. But neither can they be supported without power, water, food deliveries. Having no corrections experience, I wonder what policy is on the matter, and I wonder whether the views of corrections and LEO personnel match up with that policy.

Their own choices put them there, let those choices get them out.

    This is a great question!!

Having not checked our official policy on this matter. We have a backup natural gas generator and the ability to produce our own heat via diesel for one of our two jails. How long the fuel lasts depends on temps and availability of natural gas in the pipeline. We, however, do not have enough food to feed the 2k+ inmates we have daily for more than a few days.
Realistically I think if the Shit hits hard most of the officers would be looking out for their families not the inmates.
What happens if the officers assigned to the jails don't or can't show up to work? I guess then the sheriff needs to make a judgment call. Release the petty criminals, "nonviolent" offenders, huber inmates?
I know that living only a few miles from the larger of the two jails I would hope they are not just turned loose to form packs like wild dogs. Even unarmed at first they could pose quite a threat on the community.

If youre at work when it goes down, youre stuck there. Everyone is locked down, there is a staff recall, and we work until given the all clear, however many hours or days that may be. Nothing but a fat overtime check at the end of the tunnel.

I think you might be surprised by how few prisons actually have an SOP for long term SHTF events. My experience has been that they operate under the natural disaster/this too shall pass mentality.

I'm not saying this derisively, just that it is an acceptably governmental way of thinking.

cant speak for correctional facilities, but for my part, I wont be taking prisoners.

Sorry but if I feel youre a threat enough to me and mine to be held, youre threat enough for a bullet.
    Dont sweat the small stuff.

If youre not taking fire, its all small stuff.
